How to Start a Wholesale Business in Kenya (2026 Guide)
Comilmart Team
October 21, 2026
Kenya has a large network of small retailers, kiosks and shops that restock from wholesalers, so many people ask how to start a wholesale business in Kenya. The model is simple: buy in volume at a lower unit cost, store the goods, and sell smaller lots to retailers who cannot buy directly from manufacturers. The challenges are cash flow, storage, credit and choosing a product that moves. This guide walks through registration on eCitizen, the KRA PIN, the county business permit, where to buy and what to budget for. We do not give capital or profit figures. Fees and steps are as read on official or named pages in October 2026, so confirm them before you pay.
Choose your product and your customers
Pick a product group you can store and sell quickly: for example sugar, rice and cooking oil, packaged foods, household goods, stationery, hardware, toiletries or phone accessories. Talk to ten shop owners in your target area and ask what they buy, how often, in what quantity and how they pay. Our guides on the best products to sell in Kenya and wholesale sugar, rice and cooking oil in Kenya can help you see what is in demand. If you serve a city outside Nairobi, see our supplier guides for Nakuru and Kisumu.
Register your wholesale business in Kenya
The Business Registration Service (BRS) handles registration through eCitizen. Its FAQ on registering a business name says you log in to the BRS portal, open Companies Registry Services and start a new application; key in a minimum of three and a maximum of five preferred names in order of priority; complete the information; download, sign, scan and upload the auto-generated registration form; then submit and approve the payment prompt on your phone. It states a fee of KSh 950 for a business name and notes that a business name is not a legal entity. Read the BRS FAQ, and see our guide to registering a business in Kenya.
The Kenya government investment portal's starting-a-business page lists the main structures as a local company, a branch of a foreign company, a single-owner business and a limited liability partnership, and says registration is handled through eCitizen. A company is a separate legal entity, which can matter if you plan to take on big credit or partners. Ask a lawyer or accountant which structure fits you.
Get a KRA PIN
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) explains that an individual registers for a PIN on the iTax portal by choosing the individual taxpayer type and the online form, completing three sections (basic information, obligation details and source of income), and submitting to receive an acknowledgment receipt with a reference number. Check the KRA site for the route that applies to a registered business. See the KRA guidance on registering for a PIN, and ask KRA or an accountant which tax obligations apply to a wholesale business.
County single business permit
The same investment portal page states that county governments are responsible for issuing single business permits, and that the type of permit depends on factors such as location, staff numbers and business activities. A Kenyans.co.ke guide to the Nairobi permit published in February 2021 listed the documents as a business registration certificate or certificate of incorporation, the PIN certificate, the physical address with plot details and a national ID or passport number, and said the fee depends on the number of employees, the type of business and the location. Because that article is several years old and counties update fees and systems, ask your county government for the current requirements and fee. Display the permit at your premises once you receive it. See the invest.go.ke page on starting a business.
Where wholesalers buy stock in Kenya
- Manufacturers and their distributors. Best for packaged food, drinks and household goods, with price lists, minimum orders and delivery terms. Our guide on verified wholesale suppliers in Kenya explains how to compare them.
- Nairobi wholesale areas and markets. Gikomba has long been known for second-hand clothing. A Trade Mark Africa article from March 2016 described it as the biggest wholesale centre of the mitumba (used clothing) trade in East Africa. That is an older source, so visit and check what traders sell today.
- Importers. Order from overseas suppliers once you know the demand. Calculate landed cost first and read our guides on importing from China to Kenya and landed cost.
- Online B2B sourcing. On Comilmart, buyers browse bulk listings with minimum order quantities and tiered pricing at /browse and send requests at /request-quotation. B2B suppliers arrange and pay for shipping and delivery; Comilmart does not handle freight, customs clearance or duties.
Check suppliers before you pay
A wholesale business turns on trust. Ask every new supplier for registration details, visit the premises if you can, start with a small order and pay in a traceable way. Get quotes in writing with the unit price, minimum order, delivery date and return terms. Our verify a supplier checklist and our explainer on MOQ show what to ask.
What to budget for when you start a wholesale business in Kenya
Build your own budget from real quotes, not from a number someone gives you online:
- Business name or company registration and PIN.
- County permit and any premises requirements.
- Rent and deposit for a store or shop.
- Shelving, pallets and basic security.
- Opening stock for one or two product groups.
- Transport from supplier to store and from store to customer.
- Staff or helpers.
- A cash reserve to cover delayed payments and restocking.
The biggest risk is credit. Give credit only to customers whose shops you know, set limits and write terms down. Count stock every week and take a note of anything near expiry.
Pricing your wholesale lots
A wholesale price must cover what you paid, transport, storage, losses, your costs and your own pay. Many beginners copy the market price without checking whether it leaves anything for them. Use our guide on how to price products for resale to work out markup and margin, and update prices when your costs or the Kenyan shilling exchange rate move.
