How to Sell on WhatsApp Business in Africa (2026 Guide)

Many African small businesses already sell through chats, so learning how to sell on WhatsApp Business is one of the cheapest ways to turn conversations into orders. The WhatsApp Business app is a separate app for businesses, with tools such as a catalogue, labels and quick replies. But tools do not create trust. Customers buy when they can see what you sell, know the price, trust your delivery and feel safe paying. This guide shows how to set up, what the platform says about catalogues and broadcast lists, how to take an order and how to avoid breaking WhatsApp's rules. Platform facts are as read on WhatsApp's own pages in October 2026, and features can change.

How to sell on WhatsApp Business: what the app gives you

WhatsApp's Business Features page says the Business app lets you create a catalogue to showcase your products and services, and describes special tools to automate, sort and quickly respond to messages. Open the app and look at what it offers on your phone, for example a business profile, a catalogue, ways to sort chats by status and saved replies for questions you answer every day. Use a separate number for the business if you can, so customer messages are not mixed with family chats. Check WhatsApp's own help pages for how each tool works and which tools your version supports, because they can change.

Set up your WhatsApp Business catalogue

In its announcement of catalogues, WhatsApp said a business can add information including price, description and product code for each item, that catalogues are hosted by WhatsApp so they do not use storage on the business's or customer's phone, and that they let customers see the full range inside WhatsApp. That announcement was published in November 2019, so check the current limits in the app. Practical advice for a strong catalogue:

  • Use real photos in good light with a clean background. Our guide on product photography tips can help.
  • Name each item clearly with brand, size, colour or model.
  • Put the price in every item. Customers who must ask for the price often leave.
  • Group items sensibly into categories your customers think in.
  • Remove sold-out items so you do not disappoint buyers.

You can read WhatsApp's own announcement of catalogues for the original description.

Broadcast lists: use them carefully

WhatsApp's help page on broadcast lists says only people who have added you to their phone contacts will receive your broadcast message, that you can include up to 256 contacts in each list, that you can create as many lists as you like, and that broadcast lists are not supported on Windows, Mac or Web. Recipients see your message as an individual message. This means you should ask customers to save your number, and build lists by interest, for example fabric buyers, school supplies or restock alerts. Read the broadcast lists help page.

WhatsApp's Messaging Guidelines state that repeated unwanted contact with users counts as spam or fraud, and prohibit bulk messaging, auto-messaging or automation to harm WhatsApp or its users. The safe approach is simple: message only people who have asked to hear from you, keep messages relevant, do not send the same promotion every day and let people leave easily. See the WhatsApp Messaging Guidelines. If you are unsure whether a tool or practice is allowed, check the WhatsApp Business policy pages.

Selling on WhatsApp Business: handling orders to delivery

  1. Greet and qualify. Use a saved reply or greeting if your app offers one, then ask what the customer needs, the quantity and the delivery area.
  2. Confirm the details in writing. Item, size or model, price, delivery cost, delivery date and payment method, in one message the customer can approve.
  3. Collect payment in a way you can verify. Payment options differ by country and bank. Check that money has actually arrived before you release goods, and keep screenshots of receipts.
  4. Track the status. Mark each chat as new order, paid, packed, shipped or delivered, using the app's sorting tools if you have them or a simple notebook.
  5. Send proof of dispatch. A photo of the packed item and the rider or courier details builds confidence.
  6. Follow up after delivery. Ask if the item is correct and invite a repeat order.

If you offer cash on delivery, read our notes on cash on delivery for vendors before you promise it widely.

Customer trust: what makes buyers say yes

In Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and elsewhere, buyers are wary of sellers who vanish after payment, so trust is part of your product. Make it visible:

  • Show a business name, address or pickup point, and working hours on your profile.
  • Post your delivery and return policy in plain words.
  • Reply promptly, politely and in the language your customers use.
  • Do not oversell. Say clearly if an item is used, a replica or on pre-order.
  • Keep records of every sale so you can resolve disputes.
  • Do not sell goods that are banned or restricted. Check our prohibited products list as a starting point, and the laws of your country.

Growing beyond WhatsApp

A chat is a good start, but it has limits: search is poor, catalogues are small and it is hard to show reviews. As volume grows, consider adding a marketplace listing as another channel. Comilmart vendors sign up at /register/vendor in a 5-step process, and business verification is a separate later step that does not block creating your account or listing. Seller rules are at /seller-policy, /terms and /privacy. For delivery, payout and fee details, ask through /contact-us.
