Get Your First Customers Online: Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana (2026)

Getting your first customers online is harder than getting your hundredth. You have no reviews, no repeat buyers and no reputation yet. The good news is that early customers rarely come from big advertising budgets. They come from people who already know you, from conversations you start yourself and from showing buyers, clearly and honestly, that you will deliver. This guide gives sellers in Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana a practical way to get first customers for an online store, with no invented numbers and no promises of results.

Be ready before you look for buyers

Sending people to a half-finished shop wastes the chance. Before you promote anything, check these basics:

  • At least a few products with clear titles, honest descriptions and sharp photos. See our guides on product titles and descriptions and product photography.
  • A clear price in your local currency and an honest delivery estimate for your main cities.
  • A returns and refunds approach you can explain in two sentences.
  • A way to receive payment that you have tested yourself.
  • A phone number and a chat account that someone answers during stated hours.

Step 1: Start with people who already know you

Your first ten buyers are often friends, relatives, former colleagues, neighbours and members of your church, mosque, school or community groups. Do not just post a link and hope. Message people one by one, tell them what you sell and who it is for, and ask whether they know someone who needs it. Ask for honest feedback, not praise. Offer to answer questions, not to pressure. These early conversations also teach you what questions buyers ask, which you can add to your listings.

Step 2: Use WhatsApp Business properly

WhatsApp is where many African shoppers already talk to sellers. WhatsApp's own help pages say a WhatsApp Business catalog shows your products or services on your business profile so customers can browse and contact you. Each item needs a unique title, and you can add details such as price, description, website link and product code. A catalog can contain up to 500 items, and prices are only available in certain countries (WhatsApp, About catalog).

The same help centre explains quick replies: saved shortcuts for messages you send often, which can include media, with up to 50 stored (WhatsApp, how to use quick replies). Use them for your price list, delivery information and payment instructions, so you answer fast without typing the same text.

Features and availability differ by country, so check what your version of the app offers.

Step 3: Show your products on social media without spamming

Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and X can all work, but pick one or two and post steadily instead of everywhere at once. Posts that tend to build trust are:

  • Clear photos and short videos of the real product, from several angles.
  • How the product is used, with simple tips.
  • Packing and dispatch, so people see that orders really go out.
  • Answers to questions customers ask you.
  • Your story and why you chose this product.

Always give the same information everywhere: price, location, delivery areas and how to order. Avoid adding people to groups or sending bulk messages without their permission.

Step 4: Ask for referrals and reviews

When a customer is happy, say thank you and ask them to tell one friend or leave a review. Make it easy: send a short message with a link or instructions. A small thank-you, such as a discount on their next order, is your choice, but do not offer or accept payment for fake reviews. Fake reviews damage trust and may break platform rules. Show real feedback, with the customer's permission, in your posts and listings. Our guide to after-sales support explains what buyers expect after they pay.

Step 5: List on a marketplace as well

A marketplace can put your products in front of buyers who are already searching. Comilmart's retail catalog is at /marketplace/shop, and vendors sign up at /register/vendor in five steps: account info, seller type, business info, selling info and agreements. Business verification is a separate later step in the vendor dashboard and does not block you from creating an account or listing. We cannot promise buyers, orders or sales, so keep promoting your own channels as well. For rules, read /seller-policy, and for the wider picture see how to sell online in Nigeria.

Respect customers' data and consent

If you collect phone numbers and send promotions, you are handling personal data. Kenya's Office of the Data Protection Commissioner published a 2025 guidance note for micro, small and medium enterprises. It says MSMEs need explicit consent from individuals before sending commercial information, should provide a simple opt-out and must ensure consent can be withdrawn easily (ODPC, guidance note on processing by MSMEs). Nigeria and Ghana also have data protection laws and regulators, so check the rules that apply in your country. A good habit everywhere: ask before you add someone to a broadcast list, and always let them leave.

A simple four-week plan

WeekFocus
1Finish three to five listings, set up your WhatsApp Business profile and catalog, write quick replies
2Message your warm network one by one, ask for feedback and take your first orders
3Post steadily on one or two social platforms, share real packing and delivery photos, ask happy buyers for referrals
4Review what worked, fix slow replies or confusing listings, list on a marketplace and plan the next month

Treat this as a starting point. Your own results will vary with your product, price, city and effort.

Common mistakes

  • Promoting before photos, prices and delivery details are ready.
  • Replying slowly or not at all.
  • Over-promising delivery times.
  • Copying competitor photos or text.
  • Selling too many unrelated products at once.
  • Ignoring complaints. Fix the problem publicly and politely.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my first customers online with no money? Start with your own network, WhatsApp Business and free social posts. Time and honesty cost nothing.

Should I pay for ads? Only once your listings and delivery process work. We cannot say what ads will return for your product.

Is it better to sell on WhatsApp or on a marketplace? Many sellers use both. WhatsApp gives you direct conversations, and a marketplace gives you searchable listings.

How many reviews do I need? There is no magic number. Collect real feedback from every happy customer.

What should I sell first? See best products to sell online in Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana.

Getting started

To get your first customers online, prepare your listings, talk to your warm network and make every order a good experience. When you are ready for a wider audience, create your vendor account at /register/vendor. Before signing up, our marketplace seller checklist shows what to have ready.
