How to Become a Marketplace Seller in Nigeria: Checklist (2026)

Most people who want to become a marketplace seller in Nigeria stop at the sign-up form because they realise they do not have something ready: a clear ID, a business registration, a bank account in the right name or decent product photos. This checklist lists what to prepare before you sign up, why each item matters and where to read the official rules. It is written for individuals and small businesses selling online from Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Ibadan, Enugu and anywhere else in Nigeria.

Requirements differ by platform, and we only describe ours where we can. For anything about Comilmart's fees, payouts or delivery, check /seller-policy and ask through live chat or /contact-us.

1. Decide what kind of seller you are

Marketplaces usually ask whether you sell as an individual or as a business. On Comilmart, vendor sign-up at /register/vendor has five steps: account info, seller type, business info, selling info and agreements. Decide beforehand:

  • Are you selling as yourself or through a registered business name or company?
  • What will you sell, and is it allowed? (See section 5.)
  • Who will answer messages and pack orders?

If you are comparing B2C and B2B selling, read wholesale vs retail: B2B and B2C.

2. Have a valid ID and clear contact details

Have a valid government-issued photo ID, a phone number you can receive calls and messages on, and an email address only you can access. Make sure the name on your account matches the name on your ID and bank account. Mismatched names are one of the most common reasons verification stalls on any platform. Do not share your passwords or one-time codes with anyone, including people claiming to be from a marketplace.

3. Register your business and get your tax number

You can create a vendor account on Comilmart before your business paperwork is finished. Business verification is a separate later step in the vendor dashboard, and it asks for legal name, registration number, tax number, address and documents. It does not block creating the account or listing. Still, banks, buyers and many platforms prefer registered sellers, so plan for it.

4. Set up a bank account for your business

Choose a bank account that matches your seller name and that you can access easily. Keep your account name consistent with your registration documents. We do not confirm payment methods, currencies, payout timing or fees here. For those, ask Comilmart through live chat or /contact-us and read /seller-policy before you rely on any figure. Keep a record of every sale, expense and bank transaction from day one; it will help with tax and with understanding your own profit.

5. Check that your products are allowed

Not everything can be listed. Read Comilmart's /prohibited-products page and our prohibited and restricted products guide before you buy stock. Beyond platform rules, the law matters too. Nigeria's Trade Information Portal publishes a list of goods prohibited from importation by the Nigeria Customs Service, with HS codes, and the examples on it include certain meats, used vehicles above a stated age, telephone recharge cards and some medicines (Nigeria Trade Information Portal). The page does not give a last-updated date, so confirm current rules with Customs or a licensed agent.

Some product types, such as packaged food and cosmetics, may need registration with Nigerian regulators before sale. See NAFDAC registration for food products and product standards and certification.

6. Prepare product photos and listings

Take clear photos on a plain background in natural light, from several angles, and write specific titles and descriptions. Read product photography tips and how to write product titles and descriptions. Use only photos and text you have the right to use. For product ideas, see best products to sell online in Nigeria.

7. Know the rules and your customers' rights

Read /seller-policy, along with the Terms and Privacy pages linked from the site footer, before you accept the agreements step. Our guides on seller rules and performance and shipping and fulfilment for vendors explain what is expected. Nigerian consumers also have rights under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act. The FCCPC lists them on its rights page, including price disclosure, trade descriptions, the right to examine goods and the right to return goods (FCCPC). Decide your own returns approach before your first sale.

8. Plan stock, packing and delivery

Know how much stock you have, how you will pack it and how you will get it to buyers in different cities. Do not promise delivery times you cannot meet. For what we can say about delivery and fulfilment rules, see /seller-policy; we do not describe delivery, payout or fee details here.

  • Clear photos, titles and descriptions for your first listings

  • Stock, packing and delivery plan
