Sourcing & Trade Guide

Buying Sugar, Rice and Cooking Oil in Bulk in Kenya: Wholesale Guide (2026)

October 8, 2026

For a kiosk owner, a school caterer or a small supermarket, wholesale sugar in Kenya is one of the biggest repeat purchases of the month, alongside rice and cooking oil. Margins on these staples are thin, so a small difference in the price per bag, or a supplier who shorts you on weight, shows up directly in your profit. This guide covers the prices that were publicly reported in 2026, what moves them, how to check that products are properly certified, and how to buy in bulk without cash-flow trouble. Where I could not verify a current wholesale price, I say so.

What is the price of sugar in Kenya?

Official statistics give a retail benchmark. The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics reported that a one-kilogram packet of sugar fell from about KSh 174 in January 2026 to about KSh 166 in February 2026, a drop of roughly 4 percent. That is a retail price, not what you pay when you buy a 50kg bag. I could not find a verified, current wholesale price for a 50kg bag of sugar from a reputable source, so I am not quoting one. Wholesale prices depend on the miller or importer, the freight, and whether the sugar is milled locally or imported. Ask at least three wholesalers for a written quote per 50kg bag, with the miller named and the delivery cost shown separately.

On supply, a report by the US Department of Agriculture, cited in The EastAfrican in 2025, projected that Kenya's sugar output would fall to 650,000 tonnes in the 2025/26 marketing year from 810,000 tonnes, creating room for more imports. Supply swings of that kind are one reason the price can change from season to season.

Cooking oil: price per litre and pack sizes

Cooking oil has been the most volatile of the three. The national average retail price of salad cooking oil reached KSh 358.09 per litre in July 2026, according to KNBS data reported in August 2026, the highest since October 2022. Reports said five-litre jerricans of premium brands were above KSh 1,500, and that Kenya imports more than 90 percent of its edible oil, mostly from Indonesia and Malaysia. Higher global vegetable oil prices were blamed for the rise.

For bulk pack sizes, one manufacturer's online shop listed its Elianto corn oil in 1-litre, 2-litre, 3-litre, 5-litre and 10-litre packs as well as a 20-litre jerrycan at KSh 8,800 and a 12-pack of 1-litre bottles at KSh 6,090 when I checked in October 2026, although the 12-pack was marked sold out. That is a premium corn oil sold through the maker's own shop, so a blended vegetable oil from a wholesaler can be cheaper. Use it as a reference point, and compare per litre, not per container.

Rice: Mwea, imports and duty

Kenya grows rice in Mwea and other irrigation schemes but relies heavily on imports. Business Daily reported that Kenya's rice import bill reached KSh 55.11 billion in 2025, overtaking wheat for the first time, and that the government opened a duty-free import window in 2026 to avoid shortages. A separate report said Treasury sought a reduced East African Community rice duty of 35 percent or US$200 per tonne, whichever is higher, against the standard 75 percent or US$345 per tonne. Rules and quotas change often, so check the current position with the Kenya Revenue Authority or a licensed clearing agent before you import.

I did not find a verified current wholesale price per bag for rice, and the retail listings I found mixed pack sizes and types. Ask for quotes by variety, such as Mwea pishori, other local rice or imported parboiled rice, since the price gap between them can be large.

Where wholesalers trade in Nairobi

For fresh produce, Wakulima Market (often called Marikiti) in Nairobi's CBD is described as the largest wholesale fresh produce market in Kenya. For cereals, a 2023 guide named Nyamakima as a one-stop centre selling maize, beans and other grains in 90kg bags at wholesale. I could not verify a single dry-goods hub for sugar and cooking oil, so the safest approach is to ask local wholesalers for their trading terms and compare. See our guides to wholesale suppliers in Nairobi and wholesale suppliers in Mombasa for more on each city.

How to check KEBS marks on staples

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) told the public in May 2026 to look for its certification marks, which include the Standardisation Mark, the Diamond Mark, the Food Fortification Logo and the Import Standardisation Mark. KEBS also said consumers can send the product code printed on the pack to its SMS platform to check whether the product is certified. Another KEBS briefing from 2025 advised noting the permit number next to the mark and checking it on the KEBS website. Check the mark and permit number on every new brand before you stock it, and report suspicious products to KEBS. A genuine mark does not guarantee that the sack in front of you is genuine, so also check the packaging, the batch number and the expiry date.

Storage and handling for bulk staples

  • Keep sacks off the floor on pallets, away from walls, and out of direct sun.
  • Store oil in a cool, shaded place, with the lids sealed, and never near fuel or chemicals.
  • Rotate stock: sell the oldest first and note the date received on each sack or carton.
  • Weigh a few sacks on delivery, because short weight is a common problem.
  • Check for moisture, insects and caking before you sign for goods.

Credit terms and negotiating with wholesalers

A wholesaler who knows you will often give a better price for a larger or repeat order, and some will offer credit once you have paid on time for several orders. Ask for the terms in writing, including the due date, any late fee and what happens if goods are returned. Our guides on negotiating better terms with suppliers and net 30 vs net 60 payment terms cover this in more detail.
