Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) Explained for African Buyers (2026)

If you have asked a supplier for a price and been told "our MOQ is 500 pieces", you have met the minimum order quantity. MOQ is one of the first terms every importer, reseller and small manufacturer must understand, whether you buy from a factory abroad or a wholesaler in Lagos, Nairobi or Accra. Alibaba's help content defines it as "the lowest or minimum number of units that a wholesale supplier allows buyers to order." This guide explains what MOQ means in practice, why suppliers set it, how tiered pricing works and how African buyers can negotiate a smaller first order without damaging the relationship.

What is MOQ?

A minimum order quantity is the smallest amount a supplier will sell in one order. Alibaba gives a simple example in its seller guidance: a supplier with an MOQ of 200 shirts requires you to buy at least 200 per order unless you negotiate a different arrangement. MOQ can be counted in units, cartons, kilograms, metres or even a minimum order value. Always ask which unit it is, and whether the MOQ applies per product, per colour or per size.

Why suppliers set a minimum

According to Alibaba's explanation, suppliers use MOQs so that they earn a profit on each order. Per-unit costs generally fall as production scales up, so very small orders can lose the supplier money. Setting up a machine, buying raw materials, packing and documenting a shipment cost nearly the same for 50 units as for 500. Understanding this helps you negotiate, because you can offer something that covers the supplier's setup costs.

MOQ and tiered pricing

Many suppliers quote several price bands. Alibaba's seller tools let suppliers set an MOQ and volume-based ladder pricing, so a unit price can fall as your quantity moves into a higher band. Our guide for suppliers on setting MOQ and price tiers for African wholesale buyers shows how the other side thinks.

A lower unit price is not automatically a better deal. Alibaba's seller-blog guide on MOQ tiers makes a useful point: compare total cost, including the cash tied up and the cost of carrying stock until it sells. A common way to think about it is unit cost times MOQ, plus the cost of holding the inventory while it sells, plus the risk that some goods do not sell. For example, if the 100-piece tier costs a little more per unit than the 500-piece tier, the smaller order may still be safer if you are unsure of demand.

How to find or negotiate a lower MOQ

  • Ask for stock items. Alibaba describes "Ready to Ship" products as stock goods that need little or no customization, with lower MOQs and faster dispatch.
  • Be specific and polite. Alibaba advises explaining your situation and asking reasonably. A request somewhat below the supplier's MOQ is far more likely to succeed than one far below it.
  • Propose a trial order. Offer a small first order with a written plan to reorder if the product sells.
  • Combine products. Some suppliers will count a mixed order of related items toward a total threshold.
  • Accept a higher unit price on a first order in exchange for a smaller quantity. Work out the total cost before you agree.
  • Pool orders. Alibaba's lead-time guide mentions pooling orders with other buyers. If you do this with other buyers in Onitsha, Kumasi or Nairobi, agree who pays what, who receives the goods and what happens if someone pulls out, in writing, before you place the order.
  • Order samples first. Alibaba's guidance suggests buying a few units to test before committing.

Alibaba's lead-time guide cautions that its own tips come largely from forum anecdotes and that price premiums can cost more than they save in some cases. Calculate before you accept.

A worked example (for example only)

These numbers are round and invented for illustration. They are not real prices. Suppose a supplier quotes an example 4.00 per unit at an MOQ of 100 and an example 3.20 per unit at an MOQ of 500. The 100-unit order costs 400 and the 500-unit order costs 1,600. The larger order lowers the unit price by 0.80, but it needs 1,200 more cash and four times the storage. If you expect to sell only 60 units a month, the 500-unit order is more than eight months of stock. Run the same sum with your own quotes and your own sales estimate, and include freight and duty on each option, before you decide.

MOQ is not the whole cost

Your MOQ decision should include freight, duty and clearing, not only the factory price. A small order can carry a high per-unit freight cost. Use our landed cost guide to work out your real cost per unit.

Write the MOQ into your request

When you ask for a quotation, state the quantity you want, and ask the supplier to quote your quantity plus the next price band. This makes tiers visible. Our guide to writing an RFQ has a fill-in template for this.

MOQ on Comilmart

Our B2B catalog at /browse shows MOQs and tiered pricing on product pages, so you can see the minimum before you chat with the supplier. If your quantity is below a listed MOQ, you can submit a request at /request-quotation, and approved suppliers can respond with a quotation or chat with you directly. We cannot promise that a supplier will lower its MOQ.

Frequently asked questions

What does MOQ stand for? Minimum order quantity: the smallest number of units a supplier will sell in one order.

Is MOQ negotiable? Often, but not always. Alibaba's guidance suggests being polite and reasonable, offering something in return, and thanking a supplier who declines.

Why is the MOQ higher for custom products? Custom work adds setup steps such as tooling, printing or design changes, so suppliers usually need larger runs. See our guide to OEM, ODM and private label.

Can I buy one sample before meeting the MOQ? Many suppliers sell samples, sometimes at retail price. Ask before you order.

What is a good first order size? It depends on your cash, demand and shelf life. Choose a quantity you can afford to lose if the product does not sell.

Next step

MOQ is a negotiation, not a wall. State your target quantity, ask for the price bands, and test with a sample or trial order. To get quotes from suppliers on your quantity, submit a request at /request-quotation or browse MOQs at /browse.
