Iron Rod Price in Nigeria (2026): Rod and Roofing Sheet Costs

October 21, 2026

The iron rod price in Nigeria is one of the numbers that decides whether a building project starts on time. Rods are sold by thickness (8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm and so on), by the 12-metre length or by the tonne, and prices differ by local or imported brand and by market. This guide gives the ranges we read in October 2026 for 12mm rod price and 16mm rod price, what bulk iron rod price per tonne looks like, and how roofing sheet prices compare between aluminium and stone-coated sheets. It also shows how to ask for a quote that protects you.

Building material prices move with the naira rate, import costs and demand. The figures below come from publishers who did not always name their sources, so use them to prepare a budget and confirm with sellers on the day.

Iron rod price in Nigeria by size

A Naijasabi iron rod price guide, whose price tables were last checked on 12 October 2026, gave these ranges per 12-metre rod:

Rod sizePrice per 12m rodApprox. rods per tonne
8mm₦3,800 to ₦5,200211
10mm₦5,900 to ₦8,100135
12mm₦8,500 to ₦11,70094
16mm₦15,200 to ₦20,90053
20mm₦23,700 to ₦32,60034

For a comparison point, BusinessDay reported on 28 September 2025 that in Ojo, Lagos, a 12mm length cost ₦9,500 for a local brand and ₦12,500 for an imported brand, according to a building materials seller it quoted. That sits inside the October 2026 range for 12mm, which suggests that 12mm prices have stayed in a similar band over the year, though two sources are not proof of a trend.

Iron rod price per tonne in Nigeria

Larger projects buy by the tonne. The same Naijasabi page put bulk local rods (a trailer load or more) at about ₦800,000 to ₦900,000 per tonne, bulk TMT rods at about ₦900,000 to ₦1,000,000, and all sizes combined at about ₦800,000 to ₦1,100,000. It also said the all-sizes tonne price was down 17% since 2025, but it did not give a source for that figure, so treat it with care.

For context on how far prices have moved, Nairametrics reported on 21 October 2025 that 10mm rods cost about ₦335,000 per tonne in 2023 and about ₦1,040,000 in 2025, a rise of up to 210%. Sellers it quoted pointed to the exchange rate, partly imported rods, inflation and recovering demand. One seller it quoted said that 2025's currency stability had moderated prices slightly. That explains why a price you saw two years ago is no use today.

12mm and 16mm rod price: which do you need?

Your engineer's drawings and bar bending schedule decide the sizes, not the seller. Naijasabi advises ordering only what the schedule requires, and storing rods off the ground and covered, so they do not rust before use.

When you compare prices, convert to the same basis. A 16mm rod costs roughly twice a 12mm rod per length (₦15,200 to ₦20,900 against ₦8,500 to ₦11,700), but each 16mm rod is also heavier, so per-tonne comparisons are fairer than per-piece ones. Our guide to calculating landed cost explains how to compare like with like when freight and handling are included.

Roofing sheet prices: aluminium vs stone-coated

Roofing prices vary even more by type and gauge. A Nigerian Queries roofing page published 21 July 2026 (titled April 2026) listed:

  • Stone-coated sheets, 0.55mm thick, per metre: ₦4,000 to ₦4,200 depending on design (Bond, Classic, Milano, Shingles, Roman)
  • Aluminium long span: ₦2,900 (0.45mm), ₦3,200 (0.50mm), ₦3,850 (0.55mm) and ₦6,300 (0.70mm)
  • Aluminium step-tile: ₦3,100 (0.45mm), ₦3,450 (0.50mm) and ₦4,050 (0.55mm)
  • Fibre britment sheets: ₦3,500 per square metre; Swiss sheets: ₦4,000 to ₦5,000 per square metre

The page did not label the unit for the 2026 aluminium table (an older list on the same page used per metre) and did not name its price sources, so confirm the unit and sheet length before comparing. The page's advice: aluminium costs less and suits middle-income buyers but is noisier in rain, while stone-coated costs more and is described as rust-resistant, quieter and lightweight. It also said prices vary with location, timing, import tariffs and exchange rates.

How to get a safe quote for iron rods

Naijasabi's buying advice is practical and worth copying:

  1. Get a dated written quote that states size, type (TMT or local), brand, price and delivery.
  2. Compare at least three quotes on the same basis.
  3. Check the diameter with a vernier calliper, since undersized rods are a common problem.
  4. Ask for MANCAP or SONCAP certification. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria describes MANCAP as its Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme, a certification scheme under the SON Act of 2015 for goods manufactured domestically.
  5. Buy from a main dealer or mill distributor when you buy in bulk.

Where to compare building material prices

For bulk quantities, browse the B2B catalogue at /browse, where listings show minimum order quantities and tiered pricing. Then post your size, quantity and delivery location at /request-quotation so approved suppliers can send quotations. Suppliers arrange and pay for shipping and delivery on B2B orders; Comilmart does not handle freight, customs or delivery. Comilmart buyer protection holds payment until delivery is confirmed, with a 7-day window. See the price guide for more categories, and the Ghana guide to cement and building material prices if you source across borders.
