Export Roofing Sheets and Steel to Africa: Supplier Guide (2026)

Comilmart Team

October 12, 2026

Roofing sheets, steel bars, tubes, purlins and other construction metal are bought in large volumes wherever people are building, and Africa has no shortage of building activity. If you run a rolling mill, a coating line or a fabrication plant outside China and want to export roofing sheets and steel to Africa, you will meet a particular kind of buyer: one who compares thickness, coating and weight line by line, and who knows what a poor sheet looks like after one rainy season. This guide explains what hardware distributors, roofing contractors and developers look for, which conformity rules to check, how to price and pack, and how to list on Comilmart. Regulatory notes are as of October 2026; confirm them with the regulator or your importer.

Who buys when you export steel and roofing sheets to Africa

  • Hardware and building-material distributors who stock standard profiles and colours and sell to contractors and households.
  • Roofing contractors and fabricators who buy coil or sheet and need consistent quality and lengths cut to job.
  • Developers and project buyers who ask for a quotation against a bill of quantities and want documents they can show to engineers.
  • Importers and traders who consolidate several containers and take price risk.

Our overview of exporting building materials to Africa covers the wider category. This post goes deeper on metal.

What to specify when you export roofing sheets to Africa

Experienced buyers will ask the same questions in the first message, so answer them before they do:

  • Base material and grade. State the steel grade and the standard you manufacture to.
  • Coating type and coating mass. Say whether the sheet is galvanised, aluminium-zinc coated or pre-painted, and what coating weight you apply. Corrosion is the main failure on coastal and humid sites.
  • Thickness. Make clear whether you quote the thickness of the base metal or of the finished sheet including coating, and give tolerance. Disputes over thickness are common and avoidable.
  • Profile and cover width. Corrugated, box-rib and tile-effect profiles are widely used; give drawings with pitch, depth and effective cover.
  • Length and colour. List standard lengths, colour range and paint system, and any warranty on the finish.
  • Fixings and accessories. Ridge caps, flashings, screws and washers sold alongside the sheets increase order value and reduce site problems.

Mill test certificates, batch traceability and a sample section the buyer can measure make your offer easier to approve. For wider durability points see products for the African market: heat, dust, voltage and power.

Conformity rules for steel and construction metal

Several African importers run pre-shipment conformity programmes, and construction products are often covered. Details change and depend on the exact product and HS code, so treat the following as a map, not advice.

  • Kenya. KEBS describes its Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) programme as checking in the exporting country that products meet Kenyan technical regulations and mandatory standards, through appointed inspection companies, with a Certificate of Conformity issued. The page lists exemptions, so confirm whether your goods or origin are covered (KEBS PVoC).
  • Uganda. UNBS says its PVoC is an inspection and verification programme in the exporting country, that a Certificate of Conformity is issued per shipment, and that goods arriving without one are subject to a surcharge, which its FAQ puts at 15 percent of CIF value, plus destination inspection (UNBS FAQ).
  • Nigeria. SON states that SONCAP is a pre-shipment verification of conformity to standards, ending in a SONCAP Certificate that is a mandatory customs clearance document for regulated goods, and that a Product Certificate is needed to open Form M (SON SONCAP).
  • Ghana. The Ghana Standards Authority lists building materials among the high risk goods that need a Certificate of Analysis or Conformance referencing the applicable standard, and says labels in another language must be translated into English; the page dates from 2018, so confirm current practice (GSA import inspection).

Ask your buyer which certificate they need before you start production, not after the cargo is loaded. A short comparison of these regimes is in product standards and certification in Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana.

Pricing, MOQs and quote validity for steel

Steel prices move with raw material and energy costs. State a quote validity period, say clearly whether you price per sheet, per metre or per tonne, and explain what happens if the order is confirmed after the validity date. For MOQs, offer mixed-profile trial loads, single-profile pallet-level orders, and full containers, as discussed in how to set MOQs and price tiers. Work back from the landed cost with pricing for African buyers, because heavy goods carry freight and port charges that can be a large share of what the buyer pays.

Packing, loading and delivery

Water damage during transit is a classic complaint with steel sheets: wet bundles can stain or corrode before a roof is ever built. Use edge protection, moisture-resistant wrapping, secure strapping and a loading plan that avoids shifting. Agree Incoterms in writing; FOB, CIF and DDP are explained in our guide. The seller arranges and pays for shipping to Africa on Comilmart, which does not handle freight, customs clearance, duties or delivery.

Listing steel and roofing products on Comilmart

Comilmart is a B2B and B2C marketplace for Africa. Suppliers apply at /apply-manufacturer and go through a know-your-supplier (KYS) review. You will need your company registration number, tax number, business licence and registration certificate uploads, at least two sample product images, your company mission, vision and core values, and at least one B2B category. The form states that admin review takes about 24 to 48 hours and applying is free. After approval you can list products with MOQs and tiered pricing, offer sample orders, chat live with buyers and respond to open requests on the RFQ board. Buyers post requests at /request-quotation with a product, quantity and delivery country. Payment is held under buyer protection until delivery is confirmed, with a 7-day window. For supplier payment methods and currencies, ask through live chat or /contact-us. Comilmart does not guarantee buyers, orders or prices.

Frequently asked questions

Do roofing sheets need a certificate for Kenya? Many imports into Kenya fall under PVoC, with exemptions. Confirm with KEBS or an appointed inspection company.

What happens in Uganda without a Certificate of Conformity? According to the UNBS FAQ, goods arriving without one face a surcharge and destination inspection.

Should I quote per tonne or per sheet? Quote the way your buyer compares. Distributors usually think per sheet, project buyers per tonne or per square metre; offer both where practical.

How do I stop corrosion claims? State coating type and mass honestly, pack against moisture and provide mill certificates.

Does Comilmart organise shipping? No. The seller arranges and pays for shipping.
