Export Building Materials to Africa: What Contractors Buy (2026)

October 12, 2026

African cities are adding people, roads, homes and warehouses, and contractors keep buying from China. If you want to export building materials to Africa, the useful question is not "does Africa need tiles and steel?" but which products, in which grades, to which buyers, with which paperwork. This guide looks at what trade data says African buyers purchase, how steel and tiles differ, what to prepare for pre-shipment verification, and how to present building products on Comilmart.

Export building materials to Africa: why demand keeps growing

The United Nations' World Urbanization Prospects 2025 (published November 2025) says Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt and Ethiopia are among seven countries expected to account for over half of the projected 986 million increase in city dwellers worldwide by 2050. It also says towns in sub-Saharan Africa are projected to grow significantly through 2050, and that many of the fastest-growing settlements are smaller cities. Smaller cities mean demand outside the capital: building supply shops, local contractors and regional wholesalers. The key messages are on the UN Population Division website.

Population growth is an argument, not an order book. To see what buyers actually take from China, look at 2025 customs data, published by Trading Economics from the UN Comtrade database:

Importer (as reported)Iron and steelArticles of iron or steelCeramic products
NigeriaUS$608.87 millionUS$639.50 millionUS$77.08 million
GhanaUS$727.68 millionUS$187.92 millionUS$32.81 million
KenyaUS$423.79 millionUS$212.61 millionnot in the top 24 lines
South AfricaUS$641.95 millionUS$591.10 millionnot in the top 25 lines

Steel and steel articles are far larger than ceramics in every market shown. Tile factories should read that as "competition is at the specification and price level, not a lack of demand", but it also shows where a general manufacturer with a steel or fabricated-metal line has the larger addressable market. Another figure worth noting: China's own reported exports of ceramic building bricks, flooring blocks and tiles to Nigeria were only US$16.41 million in 2025. Treat these as broad indicators, since importer and exporter statistics for the same trade often differ.

What kind of steel do African contractors actually buy?

The sub-categories for Nigeria show the point. Of US$608.87 million in iron and steel imported from China in 2025, hot-rolled flat products accounted for US$264.82 million and cold-rolled flat products for US$124.29 million. Angles, shapes and sections were US$61.61 million, and coated or plated flat products US$36.46 million. Hot-rolled bars and rods were only US$20.93 million. So sheet, coil and sections dominate Nigeria's reported Chinese steel imports by value.

For Kenya, 2025 data lists iron and steel at US$423.79 million and articles of iron or steel at US$212.61 million. The articles line covers finished or fabricated items rather than raw steel, so there is value in worked products as well as mill products. Your product page should make the form clear: coil, sheet, section, bar, pipe, roofing sheet, fastener or fabricated structure, with thickness, tolerances, coating and mill certificate details.

A practical note on cement: Nigeria's import prohibition list, published on the Nigerian Trade Information Portal, includes bagged cement. If your factory exports cement, ready-mix additives or similar, confirm the buyer's national rules first. Our guides to building material prices in Ghana and in Uganda show what local buyers compare you with.

Buyer types: who orders and what they ask for

  • Building-material importers and wholesalers buy by container and resell to shops and contractors. They need consistent batches and a price that survives landed-cost maths.
  • Contractors and developers buy against a bill of quantities and ask for specifications, samples and delivery schedules.
  • Merchants in smaller cities buy mixed, lower-volume loads. A realistic MOQ and the option to combine products matter more than rock-bottom price.

This breakdown is general trade practice rather than a statistic. Ask each enquiry which group it belongs to before you quote.

Standards and pre-shipment verification for building products

Rules depend on the product and the country. Examples of the schemes your buyer may mention, as of October 2026:

  • Nigeria. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) says SONCAP is a pre-shipment verification process that checks imports against applicable standards, and that it applies to SON-regulated products. Its FAQ says the certificate is consignment-specific and that certification cannot be applied for after goods leave the country of origin. SON's FAQ does not address ceramic tiles, so confirm with SON whether your product is regulated. Details are on the SON FAQ page.
  • Kenya. The KEBS PVoC Manual (version 15, dated 19 February 2026) describes Route A (consignment inspection and testing), Route B (product registration) and Route C (product licensing for manufacturers with a quality management system). Fees are stated as 0.60%, 0.55% and 0.50% of FOB value respectively, with a minimum of USD 300 and maximum of USD 3,500, and a Free Sale Certificate is required before a certificate of conformity is issued. Read the PVoC manual and confirm with KEBS or your buyer which route your product and origin follow.

We have not verified product-by-product lists, so when a buyer asks "is this regulated?", the honest answer is to check the importing country's rules with its standards body or your forwarder. See also our overview of product standards in Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana. Test reports, mill certificates and factory quality certificates you already hold help in every scheme.

How to export building materials to Africa on Comilmart

Comilmart is a B2B and B2C marketplace for Africa. To list, apply at /apply-manufacturer for know-your-supplier (KYS) verification. Required: company registration number, tax number, business licence upload, registration certificate upload, at least two sample product images, company mission, vision and core values, and at least one B2B category. The form says review takes about 24 to 48 hours, and applying is free.

After approval, create one listing per product family, with MOQs and tiered pricing, and clear photographs of the product, packaging and a measuring tool in frame. Offer sample orders for tiles and fittings, which buyers want to see and touch. Contractors with a project can post requests at /request-quotation, and approved suppliers can respond with a quotation or chat directly with the buyer. Browse existing categories at /browse. Because bulky goods are expensive to ship, read our guide on sea freight versus air freight before you quote. Comilmart does not handle freight, customs clearance, duties or delivery; the foreign seller arranges and pays for shipping to Africa.
