Export Plastic Products to Africa: Packaging Buyer Guide (2026)
Comilmart Team
October 12, 2026
Plastic products travel well, sell in volume and can be made almost anywhere, which is why many factories ask how to export plastic products to Africa. Demand comes from households, markets, farms, restaurants and food and drink producers who need containers, crates, bottles, buckets, tanks and packaging film. It is also a sector where rules can change quickly, because several governments regulate some plastic items. This guide is for non-Chinese manufacturers of plastic goods. It covers who buys, what specifications matter, which rules to check, how to set MOQs, and how to list on Comilmart. Anything time-sensitive is as of October 2026; confirm it with the named authority.
Who buys when you export plastic products to Africa
- Household and market distributors who buy buckets, basins, storage boxes, chairs and kitchenware by the container. See exporting household goods to Africa.
- Food, drink and cosmetics producers who need bottles, caps, tubs and closures in steady quantities.
- Agriculture and water buyers who need crates, drums, tanks and sheeting.
- Contractors and retailers who buy fittings, pipes and building plastics.
Each group buys differently. A market distributor compares price per piece and how many pieces fit a container. A packaging buyer cares about tolerances, food-contact suitability and delivery reliability. Quote to the buyer in front of you.
Specifications that matter for plastic goods in hot, rough conditions
Plastic that performs in a cool, sheltered warehouse can crack, fade or deform on an equatorial roof or loading yard. Ask yourself:
- UV and heat resistance. Outdoor items such as tanks and chairs should be stabilised for sun exposure. State what you have done and what you have tested.
- Wall thickness and weight. Buyers will compare price per kilogram and weight per piece, so give both and avoid vague quality claims.
- Virgin or recycled resin. Be transparent about what each product uses. Food-contact and drinking-water products need documentation from your own certification route, which you should state accurately.
- Nesting and stacking. Items that nest save freight. Give carton dimensions, units per carton and cartons per container.
- Colour and printing. Offer a few standard colours for stock lines and explain MOQs for custom colours or printed branding.
More on designing for conditions is in products for the African market: heat, dust, voltage and power. If you also sell the polymers themselves, see raw materials and chemicals.
Rules to check before you export plastic products to Africa
Plastic bag restrictions. Kenya's National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) states that its ban covers the use, manufacture and importation of carrier bags (with handles) and flat bags (without handles), with the ban taking effect on 28 August 2017. NEMA lists exemptions, such as primary industrial packaging used at the product's source, which must be clearly labelled with the name of the industry and the end user, and it says users of that exemption need NEMA clearance and a take-back or producer-responsibility scheme. NEMA also reports fines between 50,000 and 150,000 Kenyan shillings and some jail terms (NEMA, plastic bag ban). If you make film or bags, read the NEMA page in full before quoting Kenyan buyers and ask local counsel or your buyer how the rule applies to your product. Other countries set their own rules, and they change, so check each destination's environment authority rather than assuming.
Conformity checks. Kenya's KEBS describes its Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) programme as a check, carried out in the exporting country by appointed inspection companies, that products meet Kenyan technical regulations and mandatory standards, with a Certificate of Conformity issued; it also lists goods and origins that are exempt, so check whether your shipment is covered (KEBS PVoC). Nigeria's SON states that its SONCAP programme requires a Product Certificate and a SONCAP Certificate for regulated imports, and it lists food, drugs and a few other categories as outside the scheme (SON SONCAP). Whether a particular plastic product falls under either regime depends on the product, so confirm with the regulator or an accredited inspection company. Our guide to standards and certification in Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana explains how these processes work in general.
MOQs, tier pricing and resin costs
Plastic buyers think in cartons, pallets and containers. A sensible structure is a trial tier for a first order, a pallet tier and a full-container tier, each with a clear lead time. Because resin prices move, say how long a quote is valid and whether you will adjust for material changes before production starts. Our guides to MOQs and price tiers and landed-cost pricing help you see what your buyer actually pays once freight and duties are added.
Bulky, light goods are expensive to ship per unit, so freight can matter more than the ex-works price. Compare container options in sea freight versus air freight. The seller arranges and pays for shipping to Africa on Comilmart, which does not handle freight, customs clearance, duties or delivery.
Samples, quality control and after-sales
Send physical samples only when a buyer asks and gives a real delivery address. Keep a reference sample at your factory, record the production batch, and agree acceptance criteria in advance, such as dimensions, weight, colour and a drop or load test. Tell buyers how you handle damaged cartons and claims; clear after-sales terms win repeat orders. See quotes, samples and proforma invoices for the paperwork.
Listing plastics and packaging on Comilmart
Comilmart is a B2B and B2C marketplace for Africa. Suppliers apply at /apply-manufacturer and go through know-your-supplier (KYS) verification. Required items are your company registration number, tax number, business licence and registration certificate uploads, at least two sample product images, your mission, vision and core values, and at least one B2B category. The form states that admin review takes about 24 to 48 hours, and applying is free. Approved suppliers list products with MOQs and tiered pricing, offer sample orders, chat live with buyers and respond to requests on the RFQ board; buyers submit those at /request-quotation. Buyer protection holds payment until delivery is confirmed, with a 7-day window. Ask about supplier payment methods and currencies through live chat or /contact-us. No buyers, orders or prices are guaranteed.
