Export Household Goods to Africa: Furniture and Plastics (2026)

October 12, 2026

Furniture, plastic goods and kitchen and home items are everyday products that African households, hotels and retailers buy again and again. If you want to export household goods to Africa, the challenge is that these goods are bulky, margins are thin and rules vary by product. This guide explains what customs data suggests, how bulk affects your quote, which restrictions on plastics and other household items to check, and how to list on Comilmart.

Export household goods to Africa: what the data shows

UN Comtrade data published by Trading Economics gives 2025 figures under the heading "furniture, lighting signs, prefabricated buildings". Kenya reported US$141.41 million of imports from China, South Africa US$377.44 million, Ghana US$79.89 million and Nigeria US$120.16 million. China's own reported exports to Nigeria under the same heading were US$928.11 million, almost eight times Nigeria's reported figure. That gap is a reminder that official statistics are imperfect: use them to rank markets, not to forecast sales.

Plastics show a different pattern. Kenya reported US$351.29 million of plastics imports from China in 2025, but the largest sub-lines were raw polymers in primary forms and plates, sheets and film. Plastic containers, boxes, bags and closures were US$12.26 million, plastic tableware, kitchenware and other household articles US$6.57 million, and plastic builders' ware US$5.81 million. In other words, finished household plastics were a small part of the line, which may reflect other sources of supply or reporting differences. Either way, a plastics factory that only makes finished household goods should check carefully which products buyers actually import.

South Africa reported 2025 imports from China of toys, games and sports requisites at US$294.22 million and footwear at US$542.67 million, so general household and lifestyle goods are in the mix there too.

Who buys household goods and what they want

  • Importers and general wholesalers who combine many product types in one container and resell to shops.
  • Retail chains and supermarkets that need consistent packaging, barcodes where used, and reliable replenishment.
  • Hotels, restaurants and institutions that order furniture and kitchenware in sets.
  • Market traders and online sellers who buy small quantities of many items.

That list reflects general trade practice rather than market statistics. Many buyers in this category want mixed-product loads, so tell them whether you can combine products in one shipment and at what minimum value.

Bulk, packing and landed cost

Household goods can take up a lot of space for their weight, so the shipping cost per item can depend heavily on carton volume. Flat-pack furniture, nesting plastics and compressible packaging can change a buyer's landed cost enough to decide an order. State the carton size and the number of pieces per cubic metre or per container size, and offer packing options. Our guides to pricing for African buyers and sea versus air freight explain how those costs reach the final price. Remember that the foreign seller arranges and pays for shipping to Africa on Comilmart; the platform does not handle freight, customs clearance, duties or delivery.

Plastics and household items: restrictions to check

Several African governments restrict specific plastic products or household items. As of October 2026, examples from official sources include:

  • Kenya. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) says plastic carrier bags and flat bags used outside industrial settings were banned for use, manufacture and importation, with the notice gazetted on 28 February 2017 and taking effect on 28 August 2017. Some industrial primary packaging, biomedical and hazardous waste bags and bin liners are exempt if they meet labelling and take-back conditions. See NEMA.
  • Rwanda. The Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) says the law bans plastic carry bags and other single-use plastic items, including food wrappers and single-use containers, straws, stirrers, cutlery, cups, plates and takeaway containers. The FAQ lists limited exceptions, such as authorised industrial primary packaging and PET bottles. See the REMA FAQ.
  • Nigeria. The Nigeria Customs import prohibition list on the Nigerian Trade Information Portal includes carpets and other textile floor coverings; footwear, bags and suitcases of all types (with some exclusions); ballpoint pens and parts; toilet paper and cleaning tissue; and mosquito repellent coils. It also lists soaps and detergents in retail packs. If your catalogue includes these, confirm the current position with Nigeria Customs before quoting.

Labelling is a separate point. The Ghana Standards Authority says imported products must follow its General Labelling Rules, 1992 (L.I. 1541), and that labels in a foreign language must be translated into English or the goods may be impounded. See the GSA guidance, and our guide to labelling and packaging for African markets. We have not verified rules for every product or country, so tell buyers to check the importing country's rules for each item. If an item is meant for food contact, ask the buyer whether extra rules apply.

Making a mixed catalogue easy to buy

  1. Group by product family (seating, tables, storage, kitchenware, laundry, cleaning) and give each family its own listing.
  2. Offer starter mixed cartons so an importer can test several lines with one order.
  3. Add dimensions, weight and material for every item, including colours and finishes. Say whether furniture is flat-packed and how assembly works.
  4. Set price tiers by quantity. Our guide to MOQs and price tiers helps you choose tier breaks.
  5. Provide samples of the best-selling item so quality is visible before a larger order.

How to export household goods to Africa on Comilmart

Comilmart is a B2B and B2C marketplace for Africa. Suppliers apply at /apply-manufacturer for know-your-supplier (KYS) verification. The form asks for your company registration number, tax number, business licence and registration certificate uploads, at least two sample product images, your company mission, vision and core values, and at least one B2B category. The form states review takes about 24 to 48 hours, and applying is free.

After approval, list products with MOQs and tiered pricing. Standard plan listings allow 3 images per product, and higher plans allow 4, 5 or 7 (Starter, Verified, Verified Pro), which matters if you list many variants. Plans run $0, $99, $300 and $800 per year respectively and do not guarantee buyers or orders. Use live chat to answer questions about sizes and colours, and respond to buyer requests posted at /request-quotation from the RFQ board. Buyer protection holds payment until delivery is confirmed, within a 7-day window. For supplier payment methods and currencies, ask through live chat or /contact-us. See the live categories at /browse.

Frequently asked questions

Are plastic bags allowed in all African countries? No. Kenya bans carrier bags and flat bags used outside industrial settings, and Rwanda bans plastic carry bags and other single-use plastic items. Check the importing country's rules before shipping any plastic packaging or disposable item.

Which household goods are restricted in Nigeria? Nigeria's customs prohibition list includes items such as carpets, footwear and bags, ballpoint pens, toilet paper and mosquito repellent coils. Confirm the current list with Nigeria Customs.

Do I need to translate labels? For Ghana, GSA says foreign-language labels must be translated into English. Other markets may require English or French, so ask your buyer.

Can I sell mixed containers? Often yes, if your MOQ and packing make sense. State the minimum order value per product family.
