Canton Fair for Nigerian Buyers: Visa and Travel Guide (2026)

October 21, 2026

If you are planning a trip to Guangzhou, Canton Fair for Nigerian buyers comes down to four things done in the right order: register as an overseas buyer and apply for a buyer badge, generate an invitation letter, apply for a Chinese visa, and prepare your travel and sourcing plan. The Canton Fair, officially the China Import and Export Fair, publishes its own buyer guides, and the Chinese visa centres in Nigeria publish notices for each session. This guide pulls the steps together from those official pages, read in October 2026. It focuses on Nigeria and notes where Ghanaian and Kenyan buyers should check their own embassy.

Visa rules, fees and registration systems change for each session. Treat this as a checklist and confirm every item on the official Canton Fair site and with the Chinese embassy or visa centre before you book flights.

How the Canton Fair is organised

The fair runs in phases, with different product categories in each. On the Canton Fair's International Pavilion page for the 140th session, Phase 2 runs from 23 to 27 October 2026 and covers categories such as ceramics, household items, kitchenware and tableware, home decorations, gifts and garden products. Phase 3 runs from 31 October to 4 November 2026 and covers categories including clothing, shoes, bags, home textiles, food, personal care, office supplies, toys and children's products. Before booking, check which phase carries the products you want to buy, because you will not find every category in every phase. For sessions after the 140th, check the official site for dates, since the page we read lists none.

Step 1: Register and apply for the buyer badge

The Canton Fair's 140th overseas buyer badge pre-registration guide sets out the order of work: account set-up and pre-registration, badge application, invitation letter application (only after the first two), and badge collection.

  1. Create or log in to your account. If you had a BEST account, the guide says your information moved to the new system. Otherwise register in the Buyer Service System using your email.
  2. Select your ID document type and complete your personal information. You upload a photo of your ID. Accepted documents include a foreign passport, a Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau residents and a Taiwan Compatriots Certificate.
  3. Complete your company information. Select the company's country, search for your company, and add it, or create it if it is not found.
  4. Verify your email, then go to Canton Fair Badges, then Overseas Buyer Badge, and submit the badge application. Your status then changes to "to be reviewed" and a badge number appears.

The guide mentions no fees for these steps, but check the official site for your session.

Step 2: Get your invitation letter

According to the same guide, you can apply for the invitation letter only after completing registration and the badge application. You then generate the letter on the system, choose a template language, and print or download it. The guide does not give further visa details beyond the letter, which is why the next step matters.

Step 3: Canton Fair visa for Nigerian buyers

The Chinese Visa Application Service Center in Lagos published a notice on visa applications for the 140th Canton Fair dated 27 August 2026. It says applicants holding a valid Canton Fair invitation letter may apply for an M-category visa, that online applications ran from 7 September to 16 October, and that processing normally takes about four working days with no expedited service. The documents it lists are:

  • A 2-inch photo with a white background.
  • A clear scan of the passport data page.
  • The Canton Fair invitation letter, with "140TH Session of China Import and Export Fair" entered as the inviting party.
  • Flight and hotel bookings.
  • The Nigerian business licence (CAC) of the introducing company.
  • A company introduction letter.
  • Bank statements for the past three months.

The process is online first. After your online application is approved, you take your visa application certificate, original passport and invitation letter to the centre for biometrics, then return to collect. The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria's December 2025 notice extended the existing visa-fee reduction to 31 December 2026 and lists a single-entry visa fee of 10,500 naira for Nigerian citizens, with multiple-entry options priced higher. Service-centre charges may apply on top, so confirm total costs, and check that your passport has enough validity and blank pages.

These details are for the 140th session and for Nigerian passport holders. For a later session, check the visa centre's notice for that session. If you are travelling from Ghana, Kenya or another country, check the notices of your own Chinese embassy and visa centre. Do not assume the Nigerian list applies.

Step 4: Collect your badge in China

The pre-registration guide says that to collect your badge you need your QR code, your original personal ID document and your company business card (a photocopy or electronic copy is accepted). Collection points include the Hong Kong office, some Guangzhou hotels, Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, the Pazhou Ferry Terminal, Guangzhou South Railway Station and the overseas buyers' registration offices at the exhibition complex, with the exact list announced for each session. Only the sourcing department of your own company may collect on another person's behalf. Check the final collection arrangements on the official site before you travel.

What to bring: Canton Fair for Nigerian buyers checklist

  • Passport (valid, with visa), badge QR code and invitation letter, plus printed and phone copies.
  • Business cards, in generous numbers.
  • Company documents, including your CAC registration, as the visa centre asks for them.
  • A written sourcing brief for each product: specification, target quantity, delivery port, packaging and certification needs.
  • A target price built from your landed cost. See our guide to calculating landed cost and estimating import duty in Nigeria.
  • A list of questions for every supplier on MOQ, samples, lead time, payment terms and export documents. See MOQ explained and the export documents checklist.

The attendance guide for the 137th session notes the Canton Fair's online platform and app services, including exhibitor search, business card exchange, appointments, sourcing requests and attendance planning, and a travel agency for bookings. Features change, so check what is offered for the current session.

Before and after the fair: protect your order

Meeting a supplier at the fair is the start of due diligence, not the end. Afterwards: verify the company's registration and export record, ask for samples, agree specifications in a written contract or proforma invoice, and plan payment and shipping carefully. Our guides on verifying a supplier, paying overseas suppliers and choosing a freight forwarder cover the next steps. In Nigeria you will need Form M and customs clearance for the goods; see how to clear goods at Lagos port.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Canton Fair open to Nigerian buyers? Overseas buyers register for a badge through the Canton Fair's system. Nigerian citizens then need a Chinese visa, and the Lagos visa centre's notice describes applying for an M visa with the invitation letter.

Do I need an invitation letter for the visa? The Lagos visa centre notice lists the Canton Fair invitation letter among the required documents for the M visa.

Is the buyer badge free? The pre-registration guide we read mentions no fees. Confirm on the official site for your session.

How long does a Chinese visa take for Nigerians? The Lagos centre notice says processing normally takes about four working days, with no expedited service for that session. Apply early.

Can I just order from suppliers online instead? Yes. Many buyers source online first and travel only to meet shortlisted suppliers. See how to buy from Alibaba in Nigeria.

Next step

You can start comparing suppliers before you travel. Post what you want to buy at /request-quotation with the product, quantity and delivery country, and approved suppliers can respond with a quotation or chat with you directly. Browse B2B listings with MOQs and tiered pricing at /browse. Suppliers arrange and pay for shipping and delivery on B2B orders; we do not handle freight, customs clearance or duties. With your badge, invitation letter, visa and sourcing brief ready, Canton Fair for Nigerian buyers becomes a focused sourcing trip rather than a walk through endless halls.
