Freight Forwarder China to Nigeria: How to Choose (2026)

October 21, 2026
Picking a freight forwarder China to Nigeria is one of the highest-stakes choices a first-time importer makes, because the forwarder controls your goods for weeks and handles money, documents and deadlines on your behalf. A good one saves you from delays and surprise charges; a poor one can leave your container stuck or your cash gone. This guide explains what a forwarder does, the questions to ask before you hire one, red flags to watch for, and how LCL consolidation and door-to-door service work. It draws on FIATA, Alibaba's logistics guides, DHL, Maersk and the Nigeria Customs Service, all read in October 2026. The same advice applies to forwarders serving Ghana and Kenya.
Quotes and rules change. Treat this as a framework and get written terms from any forwarder you consider.
What a freight forwarder does
FIATA, the international federation of freight forwarders' associations, explains in About Freight Forwarding that forwarders handle consolidation, storage, handling and distribution of goods; make sure documentation is accurate and on time; deal with customs and fiscal matters including declaring goods; negotiate rates with road, rail, sea and air carriers and choose routes that balance cost, speed and reliability; and advise on risks such as loss and damage. The core goal, FIATA says, is moving traded goods from origin to destination on time, in good condition and at a reasonable cost.
Note what that list leaves out: a forwarder is not your supplier, and does not check the quality of the goods. For quality checks you need an inspection arrangement with the factory or a separate inspector. Our guide to verifying a supplier covers that side.
Know your terms before you ask for quotes
A forwarder's quote depends on the Incoterm you agreed with the supplier. DHL Global Forwarding's Incoterms explainer says that under FOB the seller clears the goods for export and the buyer pays the main carriage and handles import clearance, under CIF the seller pays main carriage and insures the goods for the buyer while import clearance is still the buyer's, and under DDP the seller bears import clearance and duties. Our guide to FOB, CIF and DDP explains how to compare. If your supplier quotes FOB, you need a forwarder to collect from the Chinese port, ship, and usually help with clearing in Lagos. If the supplier quotes DDP, they should arrange all of it, and you should ask who the forwarder is.
Questions to ask any freight forwarder China to Nigeria
Alibaba's guide to choosing logistics services recommends getting quotes from at least three options and checking whether each quote covers all fees such as fuel surcharges, brokerage, terminal handling and insurance. It also advises checking transit windows and whether delivery dates are firm, insurance limits and exclusions, destination services such as last-mile delivery or duty payment, and, importantly, the actual freight company behind the listing, since a listed brand may use a local agent. Use that as a base and add:
- Who is the carrier and who is the legal party? Ask for the company name, registered address and who issues the bill of lading.
- What exactly does the quote include? Insist on an itemised quote from origin to your door or port, with a validity date.
- What experience do you have clearing goods into Nigeria? Alibaba's guide advises asking whether the provider has experience clearing goods into your country. Ask for the agent they use in Lagos and whether that agent holds a customs licence. The Customs Service's service level agreement notes that declarants may use licensed customs representatives.
- How do you handle the HS code and documents? Alibaba's guide warns that wrong HS classification can lead to fines and advises verifying commercial invoices, packing lists and certificates of origin before shipping.
- Are you registered locally? The Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria runs an online registration portal; ask whether the forwarder or its Nigerian partner is registered with it.
- How will I track the cargo? Alibaba's guide reports that buyers sometimes see tracking stop after cargo leaves China, so ask how updates are given and who to call.
Red flags when choosing a freight forwarder from China to Nigeria
These are practical warning signs rather than rules:
- A quote far below the others, with no breakdown. Missing charges tend to reappear later.
- Reluctance to name the carrier, the terminal or the Nigerian clearing partner.
- No written terms, or terms that change by message.
- Requests to pay the full amount into a personal account, or to a name different from the company you are dealing with. Confirm bank details through a second channel.
- Pressure to ship immediately or to skip insurance.
- Vague answers about who pays terminal, storage and demurrage charges if the goods are held.
Keep copies of every message and quote. If you hit a dispute, written records are your evidence.
LCL consolidation and door-to-door service
If your goods do not fill a container, you will probably use LCL (less-than-container load). Maersk explains that for LCL the logistics service provider is responsible for consolidation: it groups your cargo with other shippers' cargo to fill a container, then separates it again at the destination. Charges are based on space used, in cubic metres. Our guide to LCL vs FCL shipping explains how to decide.
Many forwarders and platforms also offer door-to-door service. Alibaba's article on its logistics marketplace describes door-to-door as the provider picking up from the seller and delivering to the buyer's door, with export clearance at origin and import clearance at destination, primarily on DDP terms, and it notes restrictions on hazardous, flammable or dangerous goods. For you that means one party is responsible from factory to your shop, but it is vital to confirm that duty, port charges and delivery are really included, and that the price quoted is final. Ask for the DDP price in writing, and check it against your own landed cost estimate.
Before you pay: a short checklist
- Compare at least three itemised quotes on the same Incoterm and the same cargo details.
- Confirm insurance, who is covered and what is excluded.
- Agree how the clearing happens at Lagos. See how to clear goods at Lagos port and how to estimate import duty.
- Pay in stages where possible and keep proof of payment.
- Start with a small shipment before you hand over a large one.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a freight forwarder and a shipping line? A shipping line operates the vessels. A forwarder arranges the transport, documents and customs on your behalf and often uses several carriers, as FIATA describes.
Do I need a forwarder if the supplier ships DDP? Not necessarily, because the supplier arranges delivery. But you should still ask who the forwarder is and what happens if something goes wrong.
How much does a forwarder cost? We do not quote rates because they change with route, season and cargo. Ask for itemised written quotes.
Can I use the forwarder recommended by Alibaba? You can request quotes through Alibaba's logistics marketplace and compare them with independent forwarders. Alibaba's guide says online ordering is only available for certain destinations; for others you can chat for a custom quote.
Does Comilmart arrange freight? No. Suppliers arrange and pay for shipping and delivery on B2B orders, and we do not handle freight, customs clearance or duties.
Getting started
Start by agreeing the shipping terms with your supplier and getting a forwarder quote on the same terms. You can post your product request at /request-quotation with the product, quantity and delivery country, then compare supplier quotations, and browse B2B listings at /browse. When you choose a freight forwarder China to Nigeria, ask for the carrier's name, an itemised written quote and proof of the Lagos clearing arrangement before you pay.
