Generator Prices in Uganda 2026: Petrol and Diesel Generators by Size

C

Comilmart Team

October 8, 2026

The generator price in Uganda depends mostly on three things: whether it runs on petrol or diesel, how many kVA it delivers, and whether it is new, used or a lookalike brand. This guide uses asking prices from live Jiji Uganda listings (seen in October 2026) to show what small petrol sets and mid-size diesel generators are going for, and what to check before you pay. These are advertised prices and not a price list: the real price depends on the seller, the condition of the machine and the exchange rate, so always confirm in writing.

Small petrol generators (about 1 to 4kVA)

Petrol sets are the usual choice for shops, small offices and homes that need backup for lights, a TV, a fridge and a laptop during load-shedding.

  • Small portable Kmax and Kingmax petrol generators were listed at about UGX 550,000 to 620,000.
  • A K-Max 3kVA petrol generator was listed at UGX 850,000, and another 3kVA key-start petrol model at UGX 950,000.
  • A Max Pro MP-2200 gasoline generator was listed at UGX 950,000.
  • A Kingmax 4.2kW key-start petrol generator (model KM19500XE) was listed at UGX 1,300,000.
  • A Honda K-4500 gasoline generator was listed at UGX 580,000, which is low enough that you should verify the model, condition and whether the Honda name is genuine.

Note that sellers mix kW, kVA and watts in their titles. A 4.2kW generator is not a 4.2kVA generator. Ask for the continuous running output, not the peak figure.

Mid-size generators (6 to 7.5kVA) for bigger homes and shops

This is the range that can carry a freezer, a few lights and fans, and some power tools at the same time.

  • A 6.5kVA petrol generator was listed at UGX 2,200,000.
  • A Honda 7.5kVA key-to-start petrol generator was listed at UGX 2,500,000.
  • A Kingmax 7kW key-start petrol generator (KM9800DXE) was listed at UGX 2,600,000.

Welding generators, which are sold for site work, appear in the same results. A 6.5kVA diesel welding set was listed at UGX 3,700,000, while some welding generators were listed at UGX 1,800,000. Do not confuse them with household backup sets. They are built to power a welder, and their output quality for electronics can be different.

Diesel generators (10 to 15kVA)

For a clinic, small factory, hotel or busy workshop, diesel is the usual choice. Listings seen:

  • A three-phase 10kVA diesel generator at UGX 6,000,000.
  • A 15kVA diesel generator with canopy at UGX 13,000,000.
  • An Easy Power 15kVA diesel generator with canopy at UGX 16,000,000.

The spread between the two 15kVA sets is UGX 3,000,000, which tells you that brand, engine, whether the canopy is soundproof and whether the unit is new or ex-hire all matter. I did not find verified current Ugandan prices for larger Perkins, Cummins or FG Wilson sets above 15kVA, so I am not quoting any. Ask dealers for written quotes, with the engine make and model, hours (if used) and warranty stated.

Petrol or diesel generator: which is cheaper to run?

Petrol sets cost less to buy and are quiet enough for a home, but they burn fuel quickly under load and are meant for a few hours a day. Diesel generators cost more up front, and are the better fit for long daily running or heavy loads. Fuel prices move with the market, so before you decide, check the current pump price for petrol and diesel at your local station, work out how many hours a day you would run the machine, and compare the monthly fuel bill with the purchase gap. For occasional backup, a small petrol set is often enough. For daily running, ask a technician to estimate fuel use at your actual load.

What size generator do you need?

Add up the running watts of everything you plan to power at the same time, then add a margin for motors such as fridges, pumps and air conditioners, which draw a surge when they start. A few lights, a TV and a phone charger fit comfortably in a 1 to 3kVA unit. A freezer, fans, a computer and a few lights suggests the 3 to 7.5kVA range. Three-phase machinery or a whole commercial building needs a diesel set sized by an electrician. Undersizing leads to overload trips and a short engine life, while oversizing wastes fuel and money.

Generator versus solar

If your main need is quiet, daily power and you can afford the upfront cost, compare a generator with a solar set-up. See our solar price guide for Nigeria for how the components stack up, or check solar listings on Comilmart. Some businesses run solar with a small generator as backup.

Buying a generator safely

  • Ask to see the machine run under load before paying.
  • For used sets, ask for the hours run and the service history.
  • Confirm the exact model, engine make and warranty in writing.
  • Check whether the kVA figure is continuous or peak.
  • Do not pay the full amount to an unverified seller. Use a platform with payment protection, such as Comilmart's buyer protection, where payments are held until delivery is confirmed.

Our guide on generator prices in Nigeria shows how the same checks apply in another market.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of a 5kVA generator in Uganda? I did not find a verified listing for exactly 5kVA. The nearest listings were a 4.2kW petrol set at UGX 1,300,000 and a 6.5kVA petrol set at UGX 2,200,000, so ask dealers directly for a written quote on a 5kVA set.

How much is a 10kVA diesel generator in Uganda? One three-phase 10kVA diesel set was listed at UGX 6,000,000. Check the condition and brand before relying on that figure.

Is a Honda generator in Uganda always genuine? No. A Honda K-4500 listing at UGX 580,000 is the type of price that calls for caution. Ask for the serial number and see the machine start before you pay.

Where can I see current prices? Prices vary with the exchange rate and stock. See live offers on generator listings on Comilmart.
