Small MOQ African Buyers: How to Structure a First Order (2026)

Chinese factories often expect container-sized orders. Many African importers start with something much smaller, and a factory that understands why can win the repeat business. This guide explains why small MOQ African buyers order small first, and how to structure a first order from a buyer who has not worked with you before. We cover trial orders, mixed or shared containers, deposit and balance terms, and inspection. It builds on our guide to setting MOQs and price tiers without repeating it. All numbers below are hypothetical illustrations, not market data. Shipping and payment practices change, so confirm details with your forwarder and bank.

Why small MOQ African buyers often order small first

We have no survey data on this, so the reasons below are practical logic, not statistics. A new supplier is an unknown quantity: the buyer cannot yet judge quality, packing or reliability. Importing costs money at several steps (freight, duty, clearing, transport), and a small trial limits what a buyer risks. Smaller importers also have limited working capital and may sell goods to many retailers in small lots. And buyers may be comparing several suppliers at once. None of this means the buyer is not serious; it means the first order is a test. Treat it as the start of a relationship, not the whole deal. For help vetting the other side as well, see our guide to spotting fake buyers, which covers verification steps that apply to any exporter.

Design a trial order that works for both sides

Offer a defined "starter" quantity that is still profitable for you, rather than refusing or discounting wildly. Hypothetical example: a factory normally sets an MOQ of 1,000 units per item but offers a first trial of 200 units each of three best-selling items, at the tier price for 500, on condition of a deposit and an agreed reorder price. Keep the choice of items small, use your best-selling and most reliable models, and confirm specifications in writing, including voltage and plug if electrical (see products for the African market). Samples usually come first; see how to ship samples.

Mixed and shared containers (LCL)

Maersk explains that in LCL (less-than-container load), several shippers share one container and you pay only for the space used, measured in cubic metres. It says LCL suits small or irregular volumes, generally under about 15 CBM, but brings more handling, a higher exposure to damage, and slower transit because of consolidation. DHL Global Forwarding similarly notes extra handling at origin and destination, and says port-to-port transit is usually about the same as FCL, with the difference coming from handling time. See the Maersk guide to FCL and LCL and the DHL LCL explainer. For a first order, LCL (or air for light, high-value items) can be more sensible than a part-empty container, but pack stronger and mark every carton. Our sea versus air guide compares the options. The seller arranges and pays for shipping on Comilmart orders, so build freight into your price.

Deposit and balance terms

A common structure is a deposit before production and the balance before shipment or against copies of shipping documents. Hypothetical example: for a trial order worth $10,000, the supplier asks for a deposit of $3,000, produces and packs the goods, invites inspection, and releases the shipping documents when the balance of $7,000 is received. The split is for negotiation, not a rule. Our guide to getting paid safely and our post on payment terms and Sinosure compare the tools, including letters of credit. Put every payment step in the contract or proforma invoice. Comilmart buyer protection holds payment until delivery is confirmed, within a 7-day window, on marketplace orders; ask through live chat or /contact-us about payment methods and currencies, which this article does not confirm.

Inspection before shipment

Offer the buyer a way to check quality before the balance is paid: photos and video of the packed goods, a third-party inspection, or the buyer's agent visiting the factory. Where a market requires pre-shipment conformity checks, plan for them; see our SONCAP and PVoC factory checklist. Verified Pro suppliers on Comilmart have inspection tracking tools. Inspection protects both sides and shortens disputes.

Plan the reorder from day one

A trial order is only worth the effort if it leads to a second. Before you ship, agree the reorder price and quantity bands in writing, and keep your price tiers visible. Hypothetical example: if the trial price is for 200 units, you might show buyers that 500 units earns a lower unit price and 1,000 units a lower one again, as explained in our MOQ guide. After delivery, ask for feedback within two weeks, ask what sold and what did not, and offer a short list of the next best items. Keeping in touch matters more than a large discount, and it gives you the evidence to propose a bigger, mixed shipment later.

Frequently asked questions

Why do African buyers order small first? Likely because of trust, working capital and the cost of importing; there is no hard data here, so ask your buyer.

Should I lower my MOQ for a first order? Offer a defined trial quantity at a price that still works, rather than ad hoc discounts.

Is LCL cheaper than a full container? For small volumes it can be, but handling and delay risk increase.

How much deposit should I ask for? That is commercial; the figures above are hypothetical.

Can Comilmart guarantee first orders? No. Buyers can send requests at /request-quotation, but no order or volume is guaranteed.
