Export Furniture to Africa: What Wholesalers and Hotels Buy (2026)

October 12, 2026

Furniture is a volume business with a freight problem: a container filled with assembled sofas carries less value than one filled with well-designed flat-pack or compressed mattresses. If you manufacture furniture, mattresses or bedding outside China and want to export furniture to Africa, the commercial questions are about design for the market, knock-down packing, durability in heat and humidity, and reliable repeat supply. This guide is for export managers. It explains who buys, what they check, how to pack and price, which wood-packaging rule matters for pallets and crates, and how to list on Comilmart. Rules are as of October 2026; confirm them with the authority or your importer.

Who buys furniture and mattresses in Africa

  • Furniture retailers and showrooms that import by the container and sell to households and small businesses.
  • Hotels, guesthouses and serviced apartments furnishing rooms in batches, often with a sample unit approved first.
  • Schools, universities, hospitals and offices that buy desks, chairs, beds and storage in volume, sometimes through formal tenders.
  • Contractors and fit-out companies who need matching finishes across a whole project.

Traders and distributors often buy mixed loads, whereas institutional buyers buy a defined list from a bill of quantities. Our guide on exporting household goods to Africa overlaps with the retail side of this market.

Design furniture to export to Africa: heat, humidity and heavy use

Furniture that looks good in a dry showroom may fail in a humid coastal city or a sunlit apartment. Think about:

  • Moisture resistance. Board edges, veneers and finishes should resist swelling and peeling. State the board type and finish you use.
  • Joinery and hardware. Cam locks and thin screws are common failure points in flat-pack items that are assembled several times. Offer spare fixings in every carton.
  • Load and duty rating. For hotel, school and office buyers, state what each chair, bed or desk is designed to carry and what test you used.
  • Foam and spring quality in mattresses. Give density, spring type and warranty terms you can support. Avoid vague words like orthopaedic unless you can back them up.
  • Fabrics and finishes. Stain resistance and colour fastness matter in bright, dusty conditions.

More on adapting products to the environment is in products for the African market: heat, dust, voltage and power.

Packing: flat-pack, roll-packed mattresses and wood pallets

To export furniture to Africa profitably, cubic metres matter. Knock-down designs, nested chairs and compressed mattresses let you load more value per container. Provide clear assembly instructions with diagrams, number the parts and add a small spares kit. For mattresses, state the compressed dimensions and the time they need to recover after unpacking.

Pallets and crates need a separate check. The International Plant Protection Convention's standard ISPM 15 covers wood packaging material such as pallets, crates, boxes and dunnage in international trade. It requires debarked wood with an approved treatment, such as heat treatment at a minimum of 56 degrees Celsius for at least 30 continuous minutes through the wood profile, and an official mark applied under the authority of the national plant protection organisation. It exempts packaging made wholly of processed wood such as plywood or particle board (IPPC, ISPM 15 (2018 edition)). The standard concerns the packaging, not the furniture inside it. Confirm what each destination country expects for wooden products themselves with its plant health authority or your buyer's customs broker.

Conformity documents when you export furniture to Africa

Furniture is not always on the list of tightly regulated imports, but some countries run broad pre-export checks and your buyer may need a certificate for clearance. Nigeria's SON states that SONCAP covers regulated imports with a SONCAP Certificate as a mandatory customs clearance document, and lists food, drugs and a few other categories as outside the scheme (SON SONCAP). The U.S. International Trade Administration's Kenya guide, last published 5 July 2024, says the Certificate of Conformity and Import Standardization Mark are mandatory customs clearance documents in Kenya for covered products and that the seller should ship only after they are issued (trade.gov, Kenya standards). Whether your furniture, mattress or foam falls inside either regime depends on the product and HS code, so ask the regulator, an accredited inspection company or your buyer. See product standards and certification in Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana for the overview.

Pricing, MOQs and samples for furniture

Price per piece and per cubic metre, then show how many pieces fit a container. Offer a mixed-range trial tier, then bigger tiers for single designs, as explained in how to set MOQs and price tiers. Hotels and institutions often want a sample before a large order: agree who pays for the sample, how long production takes after approval, and how you will keep colours and finishes identical. Use landed-cost pricing to check that your buyer still makes a margin after freight and duties. Describe your warranty and what happens with damaged or missing parts; a buyer who can get a replacement part in weeks will order again.

The seller arranges and pays for shipping to Africa on Comilmart, which does not handle freight, customs clearance, duties or delivery. Read FOB, CIF and DDP before you quote.

Listing furniture and mattresses on Comilmart

Comilmart is a B2B and B2C marketplace for Africa. Suppliers apply at /apply-manufacturer and go through a know-your-supplier (KYS) review. You will need your company registration number, tax number, business licence and registration certificate uploads, at least two sample product images, your company mission, vision and core values, and at least one B2B category. The form states that admin review takes about 24 to 48 hours, and applying is free. Approved suppliers list products with MOQs and tiered pricing, offer sample orders, chat live with buyers and answer requests on the RFQ board; buyers post at /request-quotation. Payment is held under buyer protection until delivery is confirmed, with a 7-day window. For supplier payment methods and currencies, ask through live chat or /contact-us. Comilmart does not guarantee buyers, orders or prices.

Frequently asked questions

Is flat-pack better than assembled furniture for export? Usually it is cheaper to ship, but buyers must be able to assemble it. Provide clear instructions and spare fixings.

Do wooden pallets need treatment? ISPM 15 sets treatment and marking rules for wood packaging in international trade. Confirm with your forwarder.

Do hotels buy through marketplaces? Some buyers use RFQs to compare suppliers. Respond with a full spec, a sample plan and tiered pricing.

What warranty should I offer? State what you can honour, on which parts, and how claims are handled.

Does Comilmart organise shipping? No, the seller does.
