SON MANCAP Certification for Food Manufacturers in Nigeria (2026)

Many Nigerian food manufacturers hear about SON MANCAP certification when a distributor or supermarket buyer asks whether their product carries a MANCAP logo. MANCAP stands for the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme, and it is run by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON). This guide explains what SON says MANCAP is, which products it covers, how the certification process works according to SON's own pages, and how it sits alongside NAFDAC registration. All details were read on SON's website in October 2026, and you should confirm them with your nearest SON office before you apply.

What is SON MANCAP certification?

On its MANCAP service page, SON describes the programme as launched in 2006 to make sure manufactured products meet the relevant Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) before they are sold in the domestic market or exported. SON's FAQ describes MANCAP as a product certification scheme for locally manufactured products, conducted under the SON Act 14 of 2015. Products that qualify receive a MANCAP certificate and a number logo with a unique identification number.

The sectors listed on the page are textiles and leather, electrical and electronics, chemical products, mechanical products, civil, building and mining, and food products. So food is one of several sectors, and the certification you read about for other industries uses the same programme.

Which food products does MANCAP cover?

SON publishes a register titled "2024-2029 List of Certified Products - Food Sector", available from the MANCAP page as a PDF. It lists the company, address, certified product and state for each entry, and the categories we saw included bakery products, table water, pasta, rice, flour and grains, dairy, beverages, seasonings, noodles, confectionery, oils, sugar, salt and animal feed. The register shows no publication date beyond the 2024 to 2029 period. Check the list for products like yours to see how SON describes each certified item, then ask a SON State Office whether your product has a Nigerian Industrial Standard that applies.

How SON MANCAP certification works step by step

SON's MANCAP FAQ gives these steps for an applicant:

  1. Enquire at your nearest SON State Office and obtain the application form.
  2. Submit your documents: a CAC certificate of incorporation, an on-the-spot test report (or a report from an IPAN-accredited laboratory if the on-the-spot test is not comprehensive), and proof of payment for the form and certification.
  3. Pass the inspections. SON says a minimum of two quarterly inspections are required before certification.
  4. Receive the certificate and logo. Each logo has a unique identification number and may be placed on each unit or on the label.

The service page also lists an online route, the MANCAP portal at mancap.son.gov.ng, and links a process flowchart. The FAQ says the process takes about 60 days from receipt of the application at the MANCAP Division office, provided all requirements are met. As with any regulator timeline, plan for delays caused by incomplete documents.

Your products must meet all requirements of the relevant NIS. A weak laboratory result, an unclean production area or incomplete records can all hold up certification, so prepare the factory before you submit.

Validity, surveillance and renewal

According to the FAQ, the MANCAP certificate is valid for three years. During that period, the SON State Office covering your area inspects the factory quarterly. After three years, recertification or revalidation is required and a new certificate is issued. This quarterly surveillance is a real commitment for a small manufacturer: you need to keep your records, hygiene and process controls in order all year, not just on inspection day.

Fast Track and export certificates

The FAQ describes two further routes. MANCAP Fast Track is a verification exercise, not full certification. It checks production and quality assurance capability, and it issues a logo number valid for six months, within which full certification is expected. SON says the aim is to facilitate trade and support small businesses. Separately, product-type certification for export is issued according to the requirements of the destination country or customer, is valid for one year, and states the destination country and the applicable specification. The FAQ also says MANCAP-certified products can be exported to West African countries. If export is your goal, read our guide to NEPC exporter registration and the NXP form as well.

What does MANCAP cost?

SON's FAQ says that certification and inspection fees are published and available at SON State Offices nationwide. SON also links an administrative charges schedule from the MANCAP page, but the document we read shows no issue date, so we do not quote any amount here. Ask your SON State Office for the current charges before you budget, and pay only through the route SON gives you.

MANCAP and NAFDAC: do not assume one replaces the other

Packaged food in Nigeria also needs NAFDAC registration. The SON pages we read do not say that MANCAP replaces NAFDAC registration, and NAFDAC's guideline says a regulated product cannot be sold until it is registered with NAFDAC. Treat them as separate processes and ask both agencies which approvals your product needs. Our guides to NAFDAC registration for food products and to product standards and certification in Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana show how the pieces fit.
