How to Export Moringa and Baobab Products From Africa (2026 Guide)

October 9, 2026
Moringa leaf powder and baobab fruit pulp are two African superfood ingredients that overseas health-food buyers ask about, but they are not treated the same way in Europe. If you plan to export moringa from Africa, the first question is not price but legal status in the destination market, then contaminants, organic certification and lab results. This guide sets out what official and standards-body pages say about moringa and baobab in the European Union, what buyers check, and how to prepare. Because the rules are technical, anything we could not confirm on a page is left out.
Is baobab approved in the EU? The novel food status
Baobab is straightforward on one point. EU Commission Decision 2008/575/EC, adopted on 27 June 2008 and published in the Official Journal on 11 July 2008, authorises the placing on the market of baobab dried fruit pulp as a novel food ingredient. That decision is on EUR-Lex, the EU's official legal database. We could not read the operative conditions on the page we fetched, such as permitted uses and labelling wording, so check the full text, and note that the novel food rules have been updated since 2008. A buyer will tell you what specification they require. Read the decision on EUR-Lex.
Authorisation covers baobab dried fruit pulp as defined in that decision. We did not verify the status of baobab seed oil, leaf powder or other parts, so do not assume they are covered.
Is moringa a novel food in Europe?
CBI, an information service for exporters to Europe, says in its moringa market entry guide (last updated 23 December 2022) that although Moringa oleifera is not considered a novel food, other moringa species are. This is not an official EU register entry, so ask your buyer whether they have checked the current EU Novel Food Catalogue entry for your species and product part.
For African moringa species, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a technical report on a traditional food notification for leaf powder of Moringa stenopetala. EFSA raised safety objections: it said it could not conclude whether the leaf powder may pose a risk at the proposed uses and levels, citing insufficient information on undesirable substances and no exposure assessment. The page did not give a date. CBI says this effectively prevents that species being sold as a traditional food. Read the EFSA technical report, and identify your species by botanical name before you quote anyone.
Moringa powder export requirements: contaminants and residues
CBI says food safety rules for moringa, including maximum residue levels and contaminants, apply, and that it lists legal limits for food supplements of lead below 3.0 mg/kg, cadmium below 1.0 mg/kg and mercury below 0.1 mg/kg. It also notes that several food safety issues with moringa have been registered in the EU's rapid alert system, including border refusals. It describes Indian moringa as having pesticide residue problems, even when organic, and African moringa as usually meeting pesticide requirements but sometimes having microbiology problems. These statements come from a 2022 guide, so ask your buyer for current limits.
- Test each batch for heavy metals, pesticide residues and microbiology at an accredited laboratory.
- Dry leaves on clean raised racks, away from soil and animals, and store them sealed and dry.
- Keep the harvest date, farm and batch code on every bag so you can trace any problem.
Organic certification for moringa and baobab
CBI says many importers consider organic certification the standard for moringa because of frequent quality issues. To sell as organic in Europe, you must meet EU organic regulations, and the label must show the inspection body and certification number. Certification involves audits by an approved body, and takes time, so start before you look for buyers. For baobab, we did not verify certification demand, so ask your buyers directly.
Documents and labelling for botanical ingredients
CBI lists the labelling details moringa suppliers should provide, including supplier details, product name, batch code, origin and dates. In Nigeria, NEPC's documents page lists exporter registration, a signed export contract, a phytosanitary certificate for agricultural commodities, a NAFDAC health certificate for processed food, commercial invoice, packing list and others. In other countries the agencies differ, so contact your national export promotion body and food regulator. See the NEPC page for the Nigerian list, which is dated 29 August 2020.
How to find and vet buyers for superfood ingredients
Because of the regulatory complexity, serious buyers will ask for a certificate of analysis, a species statement and often organic papers before they discuss volume. Send small samples and agree specifications in writing. Choose payment terms with our guide to LC, TT and escrow, and read Africa's growing export categories to see where ingredient exports fit. Frequently asked questions
Can I sell baobab powder in Europe? Baobab dried fruit pulp was authorised as a novel food ingredient by Commission Decision 2008/575/EC. Check the full conditions and your buyer's specification before shipping.
Is moringa leaf powder legal in the EU? CBI says Moringa oleifera is not considered a novel food but other species are. EFSA raised safety objections about Moringa stenopetala leaf powder. Confirm your species and the current rules.
Do I need organic certification to export moringa? It is not stated as a legal requirement on the pages we read, but CBI says many importers treat it as the standard for moringa.
What tests does moringa powder need? Buyers typically want heavy metals, pesticide residues and microbiology results. Ask each buyer for their specification.
Getting started
You can list moringa and baobab products on Comilmart for free, even before verification, adding your species, test results and certificates.
