Wholesale Suppliers in Onitsha 2026: Markets, Sourcing Tips and How to Buy Safely

If you buy goods in bulk anywhere in Nigeria, you will hear the name Onitsha sooner or later. The city sits on the east bank of the River Niger in Anambra State, close to where the Anambra River joins it, and its Main Market is described as the largest market in Africa by geographical size and volume of goods. For importers, retailers and distributors across the south-east, south-south and beyond, Onitsha is not just a place to shop. It is where a great deal of imported stock first lands and gets broken into lots for everyone else.
Why Onitsha is a wholesale hub
Trade here is old. Records of economic activity at the site go back to around 1506, when the market began as Otu-nkwor Eze, opening every four days on the Igbo calendar. Over time it became a daily market, moving from barter and cowrie currency to the modern trade in imported and locally made goods. The main structures were destroyed in the 1968 Nigerian Civil War and rebuilt afterwards, and the market has been a fixture of West African trade since.
Scale is the point. Figures quoted for the market suggest an average trader brings in about six 40-tonne containers a year, while the biggest importers handle more than 200 containers annually. The market is run with the Onitsha Market Traders Association (OMATA) playing a central organising role, and it draws merchants from elsewhere in West Africa, including buyers from Accra, Abidjan, Douala, Niamey and Cotonou.
Geography helps too. Onitsha is described as a redistribution point for goods moving into eastern, south-south and northern regions, because the river, the bridges and the road network all converge on it.
The main markets and trade clusters
Onitsha is not one market. It is a set of connected trade clusters, and knowing which one fits your product saves days of wandering.
- Onitsha Main Market: the flagship. It is strongest in textiles, tailoring and industrial sewing materials, clothing, jewellery and household goods, and it also carries industrial and office equipment. It is organised into product "lines", so ask security staff or shop helpers to direct you to the right line for your category.
- Bridge Head Market and Ogbo Ogwu: the pharmaceutical and medical-supply cluster, also known for surgical equipment, laboratory chemicals and industrial tools. It is one of three major open drug markets in Nigeria, alongside Lagos and Aba, which together are cited as distributing over 80 per cent of the country's medicines.
- Relief Market and Ochanja: the foodstuff side of Onitsha. Relief is associated with provisions, bulk foodstuffs and baking ingredients, and Ochanja is the foodstuff market in the wider Onitsha trade family.
- Specialist markets: the wider trade family includes separate markets for ceramics (Ogbo efere), textiles (Ogbo abada), electrical goods, motor spare parts, building materials, glass, timber and stockfish.
How goods reach Onitsha
Onitsha has a river port run by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA). Reports in October 2022 described it as revamped and operational, with test cargo movements from Onne port to Onitsha completed and Lagos-to-Onitsha water movement still being worked on. NIWA's rationale was that a large share of cargo entering Nigeria through other ports is bound for the south-east, so moving some of it by water would ease pressure on the roads.
By road, the key link is the Niger crossing between Onitsha and Asaba. The old 1960s two-lane steel bridge remains in use, and the Second Niger Bridge, about 1.63 km long, opened to local traffic in December 2022 and was inaugurated in May 2023. It was built because the original bridge was heavily overloaded, so it matters for anyone moving stock between Onitsha and the Lagos side of the country. Even so, plan for slow, congested stretches around the city, and build delivery buffers into your schedule.
The Nnewi connection for automotive parts
If you want vehicle or motorcycle parts, look at Onitsha in tandem with Nnewi, the second-largest urban area in Anambra State. Nnewi traders are cited as controlling roughly 80 to 90 per cent of Nigeria's motor-parts trade since the 1970s, with Nkwo Nnewi Market serving as a major import and wholesale centre for spare parts and the motorcycle parts market known across West Africa. Many buyers combine a trip to the Onitsha markets with a stop in Nnewi. You can also compare current offers in automotive parts on Comilmart.
Sourcing tips for Onitsha
- Verify before you pay. In pharmaceuticals this is critical. In February to March 2025 a NAFDAC nationwide enforcement exercise led to the closure of more than 4,000 shops at the Onitsha Bridge Head market for several weeks. Inspectors cited unregistered premises and poor storage, and at least 30 trucks of substandard drugs were seized there. Only buy from suppliers who are registered with the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria and can show product registration.
- Know your line. Ask for the specific line or market for your category, and compare at least three suppliers on the same specification before you commit.
- Negotiate on volume. Minimum order quantities differ widely. A trader who sells by the carton to retailers may quote a lower unit price for a full pallet or container share, so ask for tiered pricing in writing.
- Check expiry and batch details. This applies especially to discounted or closeout food stock. Look at manufacturing and expiry dates on the actual cartons, not just on a sample.
- Plan logistics early. Agree who pays for loading, who insures the goods in transit and who bears the risk if a consignment is delayed on the road.
- Protect your payment. Avoid sending large advance transfers to someone you have not dealt with before, and insist on a receipt that names the goods, quantity and price.
How Onitsha connects to Lagos and other hubs
Lagos and Onitsha serve different parts of the same chain. Lagos ports are the main entry point for imports, and Onitsha is where a large part of that stock is redistributed to the south-east and beyond. Buyers often compare prices in both cities, then choose where to buy based on freight cost and speed. Onitsha, Lagos and Aba are the three major open drug markets, and Nnewi feeds the motor-parts trade nationwide. If you are building a supplier network, treat Onitsha as the south-east anchor and keep a second source in Lagos for backup. Our guide to wholesale suppliers in Kaduna shows how the northern side of that network works.

Frequently asked questions
Is Onitsha Main Market really the largest in Africa? It is widely described as the largest market in Africa by geographical size and volume of goods, though exact rankings depend on how markets are measured. What is not in doubt is its scale and its role as a regional import and redistribution centre.
Is it safe to buy medicines in bulk at the Bridge Head market? It can be, if you deal only with registered, licensed suppliers. A 2025 NAFDAC enforcement exercise found unregistered premises and substandard stock there, so verify registration, storage conditions and product authenticity before ordering.
Where should I buy motor spare parts, Onitsha or Nnewi? Onitsha has a motor-parts market, but Nnewi is the better-known national centre for spare parts and motorcycle parts. Many buyers compare both.
