MTN vs Glo vs Airtel: Which Is the Best Network in Nigeria?

In the MTN vs Glo vs Airtel comparison, the latest independent speed tests put MTN first on average download speed, Airtel second and Glo third, but the best network for you depends on where you live, work and travel. Network quality in Nigeria changes street by street, so a network that is fast in Lagos can be weak in your area. This guide shows what the published data says, where it stops being useful, and how to test the networks yourself before you commit to one.

What the speed data says about the best network in Nigeria

Two sets of figures stand out, and both are consistent about the order of the big three.

SpeedGeo, a speed-ranking service run by V-SPEED, published a Nigeria mobile ranking for 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026 based on 38,919 tests from phones and tablets. It reported average download speeds of 27.2 Mb/s for MTN, 17.4 Mb/s for Airtel and 11.6 Mb/s for Glo, against a market average of 22.9 Mb/s. Upload speeds and response times followed the same order. T2 was not listed in that ranking.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) publishes a quarterly performance programme powered by Ookla. In its February 2026 comparative assessment, the composite speed scores were 48.7 for MTN, 33.5 for Airtel, 30.2 for T2 and 19.5 for Glo. All four scores rose over the six months from August 2025, but the report notes that T2's performance reflects a national roaming arrangement with MTN from 1 October 2025.

These are averages from many users. They do not tell you what a particular network does in your compound, your office or your village, and speed tests are only one measure of quality. We have not run our own tests, and we cite these sources as published.

Network coverage Nigeria: why location beats rankings

The NCC's February 2026 report notes that rural areas rely heavily on 3G and that parts of the Northwest need infrastructure upgrades. That is a useful reminder that coverage maps and national averages hide big local differences. MTN reportedly launched commercial 5G in September 2022 in cities including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, Owerri and Maiduguri, but 5G only helps if you are within range and have a 5G-capable phone. Size, complaints and customer service

NCC figures show subscriber numbers as of July 2026 of about 100.86 million for MTN, 66.76 million for Airtel, 23.63 million for Globacom and 3.61 million for T2.

The NCC also published complaint counts for the first half of 2026: 413,587 in total, with 98.38% reported as resolved. By operator, Airtel recorded 228,992, MTN 124,405, Globacom 56,810 and T2 3,885. Data depletion was the only category with detailed figures, and it was the subject of more complaints at MTN (12,212) and Airtel (9,806) than at Globacom (1,373). Be careful with these numbers: they are raw counts that reflect different customer bases and different ways of reporting, and the operator figures do not quite add up to the stated total. They show that billing, data and network problems occur on every network, and they are not a ranking of who treats customers best.

Best data plan Nigeria: compare plan structures, not just prices

The best data plan in Nigeria is the one that matches how you use data. Operators sell daily, weekly and monthly bundles, night plans and social-media bundles, and the amounts and prices change often. In early 2025 the NCC approved a 50% tariff adjustment and operators raised their prices, so any price list older than that is out of date. We are not printing plan prices here because they would be wrong soon. Instead, compare these points on each operator's own app or USSD menu:

  • Price per gigabyte at the plan size you actually buy.
  • Validity: a monthly plan you finish in two weeks is expensive; a weekly plan can cost more per gigabyte.
  • Rollover rules if you renew before the plan ends.
  • Auto-renewal: switch it off if you do not want surprise charges.
  • Extra bundles such as night data or app bundles that may suit your habits.

9mobile T2 Nigeria: what changed

The 9mobile network was rebranded as T2, though the NCC still showed it as 9mobile in some active-subscriber listings in 2025. T2 is much smaller than the big three, and the NCC states that its performance since October 2025 reflects a national roaming arrangement with MTN. If you are on T2, check whether the service you get matches your needs, particularly outside major cities.

Which SIM for data Nigeria users should pick: tips by use case

  • Streaming, video calls and remote work: test MTN and Airtel in your exact location first, because speed and stability matter more than the lowest price. If you are choosing a work machine too, see our best laptops to buy in Nigeria.
  • Light browsing and WhatsApp: any network that gives steady signal at home is fine. Compare small plans.
  • Travelling between states: carry two SIMs on different networks, if your phone has dual SIM, and switch as coverage changes.
  • Rural or remote areas: ask neighbours which network works in your village before buying a plan.

How to test before you switch

You can try a second network at low cost. Buy a SIM and a small plan, then test a few times a day: morning, afternoon and the evening peak. Use a free speed-test app, make a video call and watch a short video. Note signal bars indoors and outdoors. If you want to keep your number when moving, ask about mobile number portability through the operator or the NCC, and confirm the process first. Keep both SIMs for a few weeks before you give up the old one.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the fastest network in Nigeria? In the SpeedGeo ranking for April 2025 to March 2026 and the NCC and Ookla assessment of February 2026, MTN had the highest average speeds. Results vary by location and time.

Is Glo bad? The published averages place Glo lower on speed, but averages do not describe every area. Many people use it successfully, so test it where you live.

Can I keep my number if I change network? Nigeria has a mobile number portability system run under the NCC. Check the operator's current steps and any requirements before you start.

Does my phone affect network quality? Yes. Older phones may not support newer bands or 5G, and a weak antenna or a full storage drive can slow things down.

Getting started

Pick the two networks that people near you recommend, test both for a week, and then choose based on your own results and plan costs.
