How to Export Ginger From Nigeria (2026 Guide)

Nigerian ginger is prized for strong aroma and pungency, yet exporters have had a rough few years. If you want to export ginger from Nigeria, you need to understand both the product options and the problems that cost the country sales in Europe. This guide explains fresh and dried ginger, quality limits that European buyers apply, the blight outbreak that hit exports, packaging, and the Nigerian paperwork. The information comes from NEPC, NAQS and CBI, a Dutch import promotion agency, read in October 2026. Rules change, so confirm with the named authority before you ship.

Fresh ginger, dried split ginger and ginger powder

NEPC's ginger page says Nigerian ginger is exported fresh, dried-split and crushed, and is grown in the northern part of the country. It gives a harvest window of May to October, with supply continuing for upward of nine months. It describes Nigerian ginger as high in oleoresin and pungent. CBI's dried ginger guide adds that dried ginger is sold as whole roots, slices, powder and flakes. Choose your product based on your equipment and buyer: dried split ginger needs reliable washing, splitting and drying, while fresh ginger needs cold, careful logistics.

What happened to Nigerian ginger exports to Europe

CBI's dried ginger guide (updated 16 October 2025) reports that Nigeria was the largest supplier to Europe in 2022 at 8,470 tonnes, but exports fell to 1,870 tonnes in 2024, a drop of 62 percent. It names a widespread tuber rot or blight outbreak as the main cause and says industrial buyers have shifted to China and may not switch back easily. Germany's imports from Nigeria dropped from 4,670 tonnes in 2022 to 587 tonnes in 2024. The takeaway for farmers is practical: use clean planting material, rotate fields, and keep records, because buyers who left over quality and supply will want proof you are different. We found no official source on individual shipment rejections for Nigerian ginger, so we cite none.

Ginger quality specifications buyers use

NEPC's 2018 ginger profile lists a standard of moisture 8 percent maximum, oil content 2 to 4 percent, impurities up to 2 percent, and microbes negative. CBI says European buyers often follow the European Spice Association (ESA) quality minima, which are not public, quoted as total ash 8 percent maximum, acid-insoluble ash 2 percent, moisture 12 percent and volatile oil at least 1.5 ml per 100 g. The two moisture figures differ, so ask each buyer which applies and aim for the lower number. CBI points to ISO 1003:2025 and Codex standard CXS 343-2021 as reference standards for ginger, and says sampling follows ISO 948:1980. Colour, taste and smell matter, and buyers test for adulteration with spent ginger, flour and starch, so do not cut your product with anything.

EU food safety rules for dried ginger

CBI explains that aflatoxin limits apply to ginger in the EU (it cites a B1 limit of 5 micrograms per kilogram and 10 for total aflatoxins in its spices guide, updated May 2026), that pesticide residues are controlled under Regulation (EC) 396/2005, and that Salmonella must be completely absent in spices. It reports pesticide cases, including chlorpyrifos, in 2022 to 2024 and says shipments over the limits are withdrawn and recorded in the EU Rapid Alert System, RASFF. Repeated problems from a country can lead to increased checks. Many buyers also expect a HACCP plan and recommend a GFSI-recognised certificate such as FSSC 22000, BRCGS or IFS, and ask that ginger be free from allergen traces such as peanut. Use an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory for tests. Ethylene oxide is treated as banned, so do not use it as a fumigant.

Packaging and storage for ginger exports

NEPC suggests PVC cartons or corrugated boxes with a PE film lining for fresh ginger and clean woven polypropylene bags for dried split ginger. CBI describes whole dried roots in ventilated PP or PE woven bags, slices or powder in multi-wall laminated bags of 1 to 25 kg (commonly 12.5 or 25 kg), and food-service packs such as cans or small sacks. Store in a dry, cool place and keep organic and non-organic stock apart.

Registration and documents to export ginger from Nigeria

Start by registering with NEPC to get your exporter certificate. NEPC's export documents page lists a phytosanitary certificate from the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service for agricultural commodities, and a health certificate from NAFDAC for processed and semi-processed food, so ask NAFDAC whether your dried product needs one. You will also need an export contract, proforma and commercial invoices, a packing list, the NXP form, a clean certificate of inspection from a pre-shipment agent and a certificate of origin. NAQS says inspection requests must be made well in advance and warns that plant material without a certificate can be rejected or destroyed on arrival at the exporter's expense. See the NAQS plant export guidelines.

In May 2023 NEPC announced a ginger sustainability project with CBI that included food safety training for selected ginger SMEs; watch NEPC for similar programmes. Our Nigeria export guide and Incoterms guide cover the contract side.

Frequently asked questions

Which markets buy Nigerian ginger? NEPC's profile names India, China, Bangladesh, Germany, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands and the UAE, and says the Netherlands and the UK have the highest untapped potential. That profile dates from 2018.

What moisture should dried ginger have for export? NEPC lists 8 percent maximum; the ESA minima quoted by CBI list 12 percent. Confirm with your buyer, and dry to the lower figure to be safe.

Why did Nigerian ginger exports to Europe fall? CBI attributes the 62 percent fall between 2022 and 2024 mainly to a tuber rot outbreak, with buyers shifting toward China.

Do I need a NAFDAC certificate to export dried ginger? NEPC says NAFDAC issues a health certificate for processed and semi-processed food. Ask NAFDAC whether your product falls in that category.

Getting started

Create a free listing on the Comilmart food and agro marketplace showing your ginger form, moisture, packing and harvest season. You can list before completing verified supplier checks, which are optional but build buyer confidence. Browse the supplier directory, sign up for free, and note that overseas importers can send an RFQ via request a quotation. Comilmart does not guarantee buyers, orders, volumes or prices. For more on farm-to-port steps, read the farmers' export guide.
