Export From Indonesia to Africa and the Middle East: A Guide

Indonesia makes a great deal of what the world buys: furniture from Central Java, packaged food and cooking oil from Sumatra, garments and fabric from West and East Java, rubber goods, paper, ceramics, building materials and consumer products from the factory belts around Jakarta, Bekasi, Tangerang and Surabaya. Many of these plants sell to Europe or East Asia, yet few have been approached by a buyer in Lagos, Mombasa, Dubai or Doha.

If you run a factory in Indonesia and want to export from Indonesia to new regions, the hard part is rarely production. It is being found. A wholesaler in Dar es Salaam or a trading house in Jeddah is looking for a reliable supplier, but cannot easily judge a company thousands of kilometres away from a few lines on a website.

This guide is for owners and sales managers at small and mid-sized Indonesian plants. It covers what buyers in Africa and the Gulf look for, how to present your products, how to think about shipping terms, and which compliance topics to confirm before you load a container.

Why African and Gulf importers search for Indonesian suppliers

Importers in these regions tend to be practical. They want goods that sell: furniture for hotels and homes, cooking oil and packaged food, textiles and modest fashion, building products, household goods, packaging and raw materials. Indonesia is a natural place to look because it has deep supply chains in wood, palm products, rubber, textiles and food processing.

A buyer typically searches for a specific need rather than a country. They may type "teak furniture supplier", "cooking oil manufacturer" or "fabric wholesale", and add "Indonesia" because they have heard of the quality or the price range. They may also type "import from Indonesia" when they want to understand the process. Your listing should answer the product search first and the country search second.

Many Gulf and African importers also care about faith-friendly products. If you make food, cosmetics or personal care items, halal status is often one of the first questions. If you make modest clothing, fabric weights and finishing details matter more than a brand story.

What your listing needs before a buyer will write to you

Overseas buyers cannot visit your plant in Cikarang or Sidoarjo on a whim. Your listing has to stand in for the factory tour. Missing information usually means the buyer moves to the next supplier rather than asking you a question.

  • Product name, model or code, material, size and finish, in metric units
  • Minimum order quantity (MOQ), and whether a trial order can be smaller
  • Tiered pricing by quantity rather than one flat price
  • Lead time for stock items and for custom or made-to-order items
  • Whether samples are available, who pays, and how they are sent
  • Certifications and test reports that apply to the product
  • Clear photos from several angles, plus a short video where it helps
  • Company registration and contact details that show you are a real business

Comilmart listings support MOQ, tiered pricing, lead times, samples, specifications, certifications and product videos, so each of these questions has a place to be answered up front.

Buyer concern Where to address it
Is this the item I need? Specifications and photos
Can I afford a first order? MOQ and price tiers
When can it ship? Lead time field
Will it pass in my market? Certifications and documents
Can I test the quality? Sample policy

How the marketplace process works for an Indonesian factory

Think of a B2B marketplace as the front door of your export business. Shipping and paperwork still happen in the normal way, but you reach a serious inquiry with less cold outreach.

  1. Apply and get verified. Applying is free on the manufacturer application page. Comilmart reviews company details, your registration number, tax or VAT number, business licence, certificates, logo and sample product photos. Approved companies receive a Verified badge.
  2. List your products. Add specifications, MOQ, price tiers and lead times.
  3. Answer buyers. Buyers can post sourcing requests, receive quotations and chat with suppliers.
  4. Negotiate. Offers and counter-offers let both sides settle quantity and price in the same place.
  5. Use buyer protection. Trade Assurance is available as a general protection feature; read how it applies before relying on it for a particular order.
  6. Ship and document. Prepare the export paperwork with your freight forwarder or customs broker.

Comilmart is run by a team based in Qatar, with buyers mainly in Africa and the Middle East and Gulf, and it has a dedicated Sell to Africa focus. That gives buyers a way to find you; it does not guarantee orders.

Shipping terms when you export from Indonesia

Buyers will ask what the goods cost on arrival, not only at your factory gate. Decide in advance which Incoterms you will quote. Common choices are EXW (the buyer collects from your premises), FCA, FOB (you deliver onto the vessel at an Indonesian port) and CFR or CIF (you arrange the main sea freight to the destination port).

For a first export, FOB is often comfortable because your responsibility ends at the Indonesian side. Indonesia is an archipelago, so think early about domestic logistics: trucking or coastal shipping from your plant to a major port such as Tanjung Priok in Jakarta, Tanjung Perak in Surabaya or Tanjung Emas in Semarang, and the cost and handling that go with it.

Buyers can use the landed-cost calculator and shipping rate tools on the platform, and ComilExpress is Comilmart's own logistics service. Treat any estimate as a planning figure and never promise a delivery date that depends on a carrier.

Packing matters as much as price. Containers bound for Africa or the Gulf face humidity, heat, long transit and rough port handling. Use moisture barriers, strong corners, clear carton marks and, for wooden items, check what fumigation or treatment the destination requires.

Getting the pricing and payment conversation right

Quote in a stable currency, usually US dollars, and state the currency, Incoterm and validity period on every quotation. Buyers on Comilmart see prices displayed in multiple currencies, which helps them compare, but your invoice should still name one currency clearly.

Be honest about lead time. A buyer promised four weeks who receives goods in eight will not reorder. If raw material prices move, put a validity date on your price.

For first orders, many buyers prefer to start small. Offering a sample and a modest trial MOQ can win a customer who later orders full containers.

Compliance basics to confirm before your first shipment

Export compliance sounds heavy, but it rests on a few well-known building blocks. Learn the vocabulary, then let your forwarder or customs broker handle the details.

  • Commercial invoice and packing list. These describe the goods and their value.
  • Export declaration. Indonesian exporters file a declaration with customs for outgoing goods; your forwarder usually prepares it.
  • HS code. Your product needs a Harmonised System classification, and the importing country applies its own tariff on top of it.
  • Certificate of origin. Some buyers need it to show where goods were made.
  • Product-specific requirements. Food, cosmetics, timber products and chemicals may need extra certificates, registrations or legality documents.
  • Transport documents. The carrier issues a bill of lading or air waybill.

Rules change and differ by product and destination. Confirm current requirements with your customs broker, freight forwarder, tax adviser or the relevant Indonesian authority before you ship, and do not treat this article as legal or tax advice. Our guide to Indonesia export documents goes into the paperwork in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an export department to begin? No. Many small manufacturers start with one freight forwarder, a clear price list and a few products. Start narrow and expand once the process feels routine.

Is it free to join Comilmart as a manufacturer? Applying is free. Your application goes through a verification review before your company is approved and shown with a Verified badge.

Should I quote ex-works or delivered prices? Either can work. Ex-works or FOB keeps your risk lower, while delivered pricing is easier for some buyers to compare. Choose the one you can price accurately.

What if a buyer wants a custom version of my product? Ask for drawings or specifications, confirm tooling and MOQ implications, and quote the lead time honestly.

Next step

If your factory is ready to export from Indonesia to Africa and the Gulf, the simplest way to find out is to apply as a manufacturer. Gather your registration details, tax number, business licence, certificates, logo and a few clear product photos first. To see what importers are asking for right now, browse open requests on the RFQ page.
